Setup Instructions
1. Selecting the Correct Connector
Identify the appropriate X-Connector for your recording device:
- Use the 3.5mm Locking X-Connector for compatible Sony wireless transmitters and other devices requiring a locking 3.5mm connection.
- Use the TRRS Phono X-Connector for direct connection to smartphones, tablets, and computers with a TRRS-compatible 3.5mm jack.
2. Attaching the Connector
- Align the chosen X-Connector with the microphone cable's connector port.
- Gently push the connector until it clicks securely into place. Ensure a firm connection to prevent audio dropouts.
3. Connecting to Your Device
- For Sony Devices (3.5mm Locking): Insert the 3.5mm locking connector into the microphone input jack of your Sony transmitter or recording device. Twist the locking ring to secure the connection if your device supports it.
- For Mobile/Computer (TRRS): Insert the TRRS phono connector into the headset/microphone jack of your smartphone, tablet, or computer.
4. Microphone Placement
For optimal sound quality, attach the lavalier microphone to clothing approximately 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) below the chin, centered on the chest. Use the included clips to secure the microphone and cable, minimizing clothing noise. Experiment with placement to find the best sound for your specific application.
Operating Instructions
1. Gain Setting
After connecting the microphone, adjust the input gain on your recording device or transmitter. Start with a low gain setting and gradually increase it while monitoring the audio levels. Aim for levels that are strong but do not peak or distort. The CO-8WLh has high sensitivity, so less gain may be required.
2. Monitoring Audio
Always monitor your audio with headphones during recording to ensure proper sound capture and to identify any potential issues like background noise or distortion.
3. Environmental Considerations
While the microphone is omnidirectional, try to minimize direct exposure to strong wind or excessive background noise. Use the included foam windscreens to reduce plosives and light wind noise.
Maintenance
1. Cleaning
To clean the microphone and cable, gently wipe them with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using liquid cleaners, solvents, or abrasive materials, as these can damage the microphone element or cable insulation. For the IP57 rated element, a damp cloth can be used if necessary, but ensure it is thoroughly dry before storage.
2. Storage
When not in use, store the microphone and all accessories in the provided organizer case. This protects the components from dust, moisture, and physical damage, extending their lifespan.
3. Water Resistance
The microphone element is IP57 rated, meaning it is protected against dust ingress and immersion in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. This provides protection against sweat, makeup, and light splashes. However, it is not designed for prolonged submersion or use in heavy rain. Always ensure connectors are dry before use.
Troubleshooting
- No Sound Output:
- Ensure the microphone connector is fully seated and locked into the recording device.
- Check the input selection and gain settings on your recording device.
- Verify that the recording device itself is powered on and functioning correctly.
- Poor Sound Quality (Distortion, Low Volume):
- Adjust the input gain on your recording device. If the sound is distorted, reduce the gain. If it's too low, increase it.
- Check microphone placement. Ensure it's not too close to the sound source (causing distortion) or too far (causing low volume and capturing more room noise).
- Ensure the microphone is not rubbing against clothing, which can cause rustling noises.
- Test with a different connector or recording device if possible to isolate the issue.
- Interference or Buzzing Noise:
- Keep the microphone cable away from power cables, fluorescent lights, and other sources of electromagnetic interference.
- Ensure all connections are secure.
