Important Safety Instructions

1. Thread Take-up Lever: Guides the upper thread.

Setup

1. Powering the Machine

The Emerio SEW-121820 can be powered by either the included AC adapter or 4 AA batteries (not included).

• AC Adapter: Insert the AC adapter plug into the DC input jack on the machine and then plug the adapter into a standard wall outlet.
• Batteries: Open the battery compartment on the bottom of the machine and insert 4 AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity. Close the compartment securely.

2. Connecting the Foot Pedal

For hands-free speed control, connect the foot pedal to the designated jack on the machine.

3. Winding the Bobbin

1. Place an empty bobbin onto the bobbin winder spindle.
2. Guide the thread from the spool pin through the bobbin winding tension disc.
3. Wrap the thread around the bobbin a few times, then push the bobbin winder spindle to the right.
4. Turn on the machine (low speed recommended) and allow the bobbin to wind until full.
5. Cut the thread, push the bobbin winder spindle back to the left, and remove the wound bobbin.

4. Inserting the Bobbin

1. Open the bobbin case cover.
2. Insert the wound bobbin into the bobbin case, ensuring the thread unwinds in the correct direction (usually counter-clockwise).
3. Pull the thread through the tension spring and out to the side.
4. Close the bobbin case cover.

5. Threading the Upper Thread

1. Raise the needle to its highest position using the handwheel.
2. Place a spool of thread on the spool pin.
3. Guide the thread through the upper thread guide.
4. Pass the thread down through the tension discs and up through the thread take-up lever (from right to left).
5. Thread the needle from front to back.
6. Pull about 15 cm (6 inches) of thread through the needle eye.

6. Bringing Up the Bobbin Thread

1. Hold the upper thread lightly with your left hand.
2. Turn the handwheel towards you to lower the needle, then raise it again. The upper thread will catch the bobbin thread, forming a loop.
3. Pull the loop to bring the bobbin thread up through the needle plate.
4. Place both upper and bobbin threads under the presser foot and towards the back of the machine.

Operating Instructions

1. Selecting a Stitch Pattern

Rotate the Pattern Selection Dial (Part 3) to choose one of the 12 available stitch patterns. Ensure the needle is in its highest position before changing the stitch pattern.

2. Adjusting Thread Tension

The Upper Thread Tension Knob (Part 2) controls the tightness of the upper thread. Adjust as needed for balanced stitches. A balanced stitch will have both threads meeting evenly between the fabric layers.

3. Starting to Sew

1. Place your fabric under the presser foot.
2. Lower the presser foot lever.
3. Turn on the machine using the Power and Speed Switch (Part 11) and select your desired speed (L for Low, H for High).
4. Press the foot pedal or use the speed switch to start sewing.

4. Reverse Sewing

To reinforce stitches at the beginning or end of a seam, press and hold the Reverse Stitch Button (Part 10) while sewing. The machine will sew backward. Release the button to resume forward sewing.

5. Using the LED Light

The built-in Lamp (Part 5) illuminates your sewing area for better visibility. It turns on automatically when the machine is powered on.

6. Finishing a Seam

1. Sew a few reverse stitches to secure the seam.
2. Raise the needle to its highest position.
3. Raise the presser foot lever.
4. Pull the fabric away from the machine, leaving enough thread to cut.
5. Use the Thread Cutter (Part 4) to trim the threads.

Maintenance

• Cleaning: Regularly clean lint and dust from the bobbin area and feed dogs using a small brush. Always unplug the machine before cleaning.
• Needle Replacement: If the needle becomes bent, dull, or breaks, replace it immediately. Loosen the Needle Clamp Screw (Part 6), remove the old needle, insert a new needle with the flat side facing the back, and tighten the screw.
• Storage: When not in use, store the machine in a dry, clean place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
