Operating Instructions

Hard Drive Recognition and Formatting:

After connecting the enclosure, new hard drives may need to be initialized and formatted before use. The process varies slightly depending on your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux).

Video 1: Instructions on how to format a hard drive partition in Windows, macOS, and Linux systems.

  • Windows: Access Disk Management (right-click "This PC" > "Manage" > "Disk Management"). Locate the unallocated disk, initialize it (MBR or GPT), and then create a new simple volume, formatting it with NTFS.
  • macOS: Open Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility). Select the unmounted disk, click "Erase," choose a format (e.g., APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled)), and confirm.
  • Linux: Use a disk utility like GParted or the built-in Disks application. Select the disk, format the partition with a suitable file system (e.g., Ext4, NTFS for cross-compatibility), and mount it.

Daisy Chain Functionality:

The ORICO 5 Bay Enclosure supports daisy-chaining, allowing you to connect additional compatible ORICO devices (up to two more) to expand your storage capacity. This is achieved using the second USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C port labeled "HUB" on the back of the main enclosure.

Video 2: Demonstration of the ORICO USB-C drive enclosure supporting daisy chain functionality.

To daisy chain, connect the "HUB" port of the first enclosure to the "Main" port of the second enclosure, and so on. Ensure all enclosures are powered on.

Auto-Sleep Function:

The enclosure features an auto-sleep function that activates after 10 minutes of inactivity. This feature helps prolong the service life of your hard drives by reducing wear and tear when not in active use. Drives will automatically wake up upon data access.

Maintenance

Heat Dissipation:

The ORICO 5 Bay Enclosure is designed with a 4mm thick unibody aluminum alloy shell and an 80mm silent fan. Honeycomb heat dissipation holes on the front and rear panels facilitate airflow, effectively dissipating heat generated during data transfer and hard disk operation. Regular cleaning of dust from the fan and vents is recommended to maintain optimal cooling performance.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your ORICO 5 Bay Hard Drive Enclosure, please refer to the following common solutions:

  • Drives Not Recognized:
    • Ensure all hard drives are properly seated and secured in their trays.
    • Verify that the enclosure is powered on and connected securely to your computer.
    • For new drives, ensure they are initialized and formatted according to your operating system's requirements (refer to "Hard Drive Recognition and Formatting" section).
    • Try connecting the enclosure to a different USB port or computer to rule out port/computer issues.
  • Power Issues / Instability:
    • Ensure the power adapter is firmly connected to both the enclosure and a working power outlet.
    • Verify that the power switch on the back of the enclosure is in the "ON" position.
    • If experiencing instability with multiple drives, ensure the total power draw does not exceed the 150W power supply capacity, especially under high load.
  • Slow Transfer Speeds:
    • Ensure you are using a USB 3.1 Gen2 compatible port on your computer. Older USB ports will result in slower speeds.
    • Check the condition of your USB cable; a damaged or non-compliant cable can affect performance.
    • The performance of the hard drives themselves can limit transfer speeds.
