Simrad GS25 Waterproof GPS Antenna with Heading Sensor User Manual

Model: 000-11043-002

Introduction

This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your Simrad GS25 Waterproof GPS Antenna with Heading Sensor. Please read this manual thoroughly before installation and use to ensure proper functionality and longevity of the device.

Product Overview

The Simrad GS25 NMEA 2000 antenna module is a robust and precise position and heading sensor designed for marine environments. It offers accurate location updates and provides essential heading data for navigation systems, enhancing the performance of compatible marine electronics.

Key Features

  • GPS for accurate and rapid vessel position and speed updates.
  • Magnetic heading for accurate boat direction at any speed and for radar/chart overlay.
  • Connects to any Simrad NS Series multifunction display or any NMEA 2000 network.
  • Fully waterproof design for all marine environments.
  • Supports GPS and GLONASS, WASS/EGNOS/MSAS; Galileo-capable with future software update.
  • 10-hertz, multi-GNSS, high-speed updates (up to 10 times per second).
  • Integrated electronic rate stabilized compass for chart stabilization and accurate course over ground at low speed.
  • Includes spat/pole mount for flexible installation.

Important Note: This device is not suitable for MARPA or Steering of an Autopilot. For these functions, a Precision-9 compass or GPS Compass is required.

What's in the Box

  • GS25 GPS Antenna
  • NMEA2000 Cable 4.5m
  • Pole Mount
  • NMEA2000 T-Joiner

Setup and Installation

Mounting Location

Select a mounting location that provides a clear, unobstructed view of the sky for optimal GPS signal reception. Avoid mounting near other antennas, radar, or strong magnetic fields that could interfere with performance. The unit can be pole or surface mounted, offering flexibility for various vessel types.

Physical Installation

  1. Secure the pole mount or surface mount bracket in the chosen location using appropriate fasteners. Ensure the mounting surface is stable and capable of supporting the antenna.
  2. Attach the GS25 GPS Antenna to the mounted bracket. Ensure it is firmly secured and oriented correctly according to the instructions provided with the mount.

Electrical Connection

  1. Connect the NMEA2000 Cable (4.5m) to the GS25 antenna. Ensure the connection is tight and waterproof.
  2. Connect the other end of the NMEA2000 Cable to the NMEA2000 T-Joiner.
  3. Integrate the T-Joiner into your existing NMEA 2000 network. Ensure the network is properly terminated and powered according to NMEA 2000 standards.

Operating Instructions

Once installed and connected to a powered NMEA 2000 network, the GS25 antenna will automatically begin acquiring GPS and GLONASS signals. No manual activation is typically required for basic operation.

Initial Power-Up

Upon first power-up, the unit may take a few minutes to achieve a "time-to-first-fix" (TTFF) as it downloads satellite almanac data. Ensure your connected multifunction display is configured to receive GPS and heading data from the NMEA 2000 network. Consult your display's manual for specific data source selection settings.

Data Output

The GS25 provides accurate position data (latitude/longitude), speed over ground (SOG), course over ground (COG), and magnetic heading to all compatible devices on the NMEA 2000 network. This data is used by chartplotters, radar systems, and other navigation instruments.

Calibration (if applicable)

While the GS25 features an integrated electronic rate stabilized compass that often requires minimal setup, some installations or specific system requirements may benefit from a compass calibration procedure. This is typically performed via your connected multifunction display. Refer to your display's manual for specific calibration steps and recommendations.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Periodically clean the exterior of the antenna with a soft, damp cloth to remove salt residue, dirt, and grime. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the housing.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the cable connections for corrosion, fraying, or damage. Ensure all mounting hardware remains secure and free from loosening due to vibration or environmental factors.
  • Software Updates: Check the official Simrad website for any available software updates for the GS25. Firmware updates can improve performance, add new features, or address known issues. Follow the instructions provided by Simrad for any update procedures.

Troubleshooting

No GPS Fix / Poor Accuracy

  • Verify the antenna has a clear, unobstructed view of the sky. Any overhead obstructions can degrade signal reception.
  • Check all NMEA 2000 cable connections for proper seating and integrity. A loose or damaged cable can interrupt data flow.
  • Ensure the NMEA 2000 network is powered and correctly terminated. Incorrect termination can cause network communication issues.
  • Check for potential sources of interference (e.g., other electronics, metal structures, radar) near the antenna.

Incorrect Heading Data

  • Ensure the antenna is mounted correctly and not subject to excessive vibration or movement.
  • Perform a compass calibration through your multifunction display if available and recommended for your system.
  • Check for strong magnetic interference near the antenna, such as large metal objects or electrical cables carrying high current.

No Data on Display

  • Confirm the GS25 is powered on and properly connected to the NMEA 2000 network.
  • Verify your multifunction display is configured to receive GPS and heading data from the NMEA 2000 source.
  • Check the NMEA 2000 network for proper operation (e.g., power, termination, device recognition). Use a network diagnostic tool if available.
