Leviton DOS05-1LZ

Leviton DOS05-1LZ Decora Motion Sensor Light Switch Instruction Manual

1. Introduction

The Leviton DOS05-1LZ Decora Motion Sensor Light Switch is designed to provide automatic lighting control based on occupancy and motion detection. This 180° Passive Infrared (PIR) sensor can operate in either single-pole or 3-way configurations and does not require a neutral wire for installation, making it suitable for a wide range of residential applications. It is compatible with various load types including LED, CFL, Incandescent, Halogen, Magnetic Low Voltage, Electronic Low Voltage, and motor loads up to ¼ HP. This device helps enhance convenience and energy efficiency by automatically turning lights on when motion is detected and off after a set period of inactivity.

The switch includes interchangeable faceplates in White, Ivory, and Light Almond to match your decor. It can also be used to comply with 2019 California Title 24, Part 6 Vacancy Control Device Requirements.

2. Safety Information

WARNING: To avoid fire, shock, or death, always turn off power at the circuit breaker or fuse and test to ensure power is off before wiring. If you are unsure about any part of these instructions or are not comfortable or familiar with electrical wiring, contact a licensed electrician.

  • This device is designed for use with copper or copper-clad wire only.
  • Do not mount near a heat source or in drafty areas of the home, as temperature changes can affect sensor performance.
  • Avoid mounting in motion-heavy areas where unintended motion will be within the sensor's field of view, unless adjusted for specific coverage.

4.3.1. Wiring without a Neutral Wire (Ground Connection)

  • Twist the green and yellow ground lead wire from the device and the green sleeve ground wire (if present) to the ground wire in the wall box. Secure with a properly sized wire connector and electrical tape.
  • Connect the black lead wires from the device to the black wires (line and load) in the wall box. The line and load wires can be wired interchangeably. Secure with wire connectors and electrical tape.
  • For DOS05-1LZ, cap off the red/yellow wire with a wire connector as it is only used for 3-way connections.

4.3.2. Wiring with a Neutral Wire

  • Remove the green sleeve from the white wire on the product. Connect this white wire to the white neutral wire(s) in the wall box. Secure with a properly sized wire connector and electrical tape.
  • Connect the green and yellow ground lead wire from the device to the ground wire in the wall box.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1. Basic Operation

  • Automatic On/Off: After a warm-up period (10-20 seconds), the lights will automatically turn on with the first motion detected. They will turn off after a set period of inactivity.
  • Manual On/Off: Press the lower part of the push pad to manually turn the lights on or off.
  • Motion Detected Indicator: The red indicator light will flash anytime motion is detected.
  • Light Off Indicator: The green indicator light illuminates when the light (load) it controls is off.

5.2. Programmable Settings

The DOS05-1LZ offers three programmable settings: Timer, Sensitivity, and Ambient Light. These settings can be adjusted directly from the push pad without tools or removing the faceplate.

5.2.1. Entering Programming Mode

  1. Manually turn the light ON by pressing the push pad. The green LED will be off.
  2. Press the TOP and BOTTOM of the push pad simultaneously for 5 seconds.
  3. The green LED will turn on for 5 seconds, then the red LED will blink once, and the green LED will blink three times. This indicates you are in Programming Mode, currently in the Timer Setting (Option 3, 10 minutes, default).

Note: Programming Mode will time out after 30 seconds if no activity is detected, and changes will not be saved.

5.2.2. Changing Settings and Options

  • To change the Setting (Timer, Sensitivity, Ambient Light): Press the TOP of the push pad. The red LED will blink to indicate the setting number (1 blink for Timer, 2 for Sensitivity, 3 for Ambient Light).
  • To change the Setting Option (e.g., 1 minute, 5 minutes for Timer): Press the BOTTOM of the push pad. The green LED will blink to indicate the option number (1 blink for Option 1, 2 for Option 2, etc.).

5.2.3. Timer Setting (Setting 1)

Adjusts the duration the light remains ON after motion was last detected.

  • Option 1: 1 Minute
  • Option 2: 5 Minutes
  • Option 3: 10 Minutes (Default)
  • Option 4: 20 Minutes

5.2.4. Sensitivity Setting (Setting 2)

Adjusts the device's sensitivity to motion, affecting the detection range.

  • Option 1: Low (50% range)
  • Option 2: Medium (Default)
  • Option 3: High (Maximum coverage area)

Figure 4: 180° PIR detection range, up to 900 sq. ft. Customize sensing range/coverage area for your application.

5.2.5. Ambient Light Setting (Setting 3 - Occupancy Sensors Only)

Adjusts the device's sensitivity to natural light, preventing lights from turning on if there is ample natural light in the room.

  • Option 1: Low Light Level
  • Option 2: Medium Light Level (Default)
  • Option 3: High/Brightest Light Level
  • Option 4: Disabled (Light turns on for all light levels regardless of ambient light)

5.3. Temporary Modes

5.3.1. Test Mode

Turns on the light for 5 seconds every time motion is detected. Useful for testing field of view coverage after installation.

  • To Enable: Press and hold the TOP of the push pad for 5 seconds. The red light will blink once every 2 seconds.
  • To Exit: Press the TOP or BOTTOM of the push pad, or it will automatically time out after 2 minutes.

5.3.2. Temporary Bypass Mode (Occupancy Sensors Only)

Ignores motion, preventing detection and keeping the light or load off. Useful when you want a room to remain dark even if there is motion (e.g., watching a movie).

  • To Activate: Press and hold the BOTTOM of the push pad for 5 seconds. The green light will double flash every 2 seconds.
  • To Exit: Press the TOP or BOTTOM of the push pad.

6. Troubleshooting

IssuePossible Cause / Solution
Lights do not operate with push pad and RED indicator does not blink when motion is present.Verify wiring connections to sensor.
Lights do not switch ON when motion is detected (DOS05).
  • Motion is beyond sensing range - move closer to switch.
  • Adjust the light level lower (Option 3, 2, 1 or disable).
  • The RED light will blink to indicate motion. If it is blinking and the load is not turning ON, it could be due to ambient light OR check to make sure that the OCC switch is in OCC position.
Lights always stay ON.
  • Check time delay settings and compare to how long the lights stay ON.
  • Make sure no motion occurs in coverage area for time selected by covering the lens.
  • Check that switch is not installed near a heat source (like stove, lights, heat vents) or detecting motion from an adjacent area (like hallway traffic) and if it is, relocate it.
Lights do not turn ON (DVS05).
  • Make sure that control is installed correctly.
  • Make sure the power is ON.
  • Check to make sure the light bulb is functional.
