3. Key Components and Features

The ARES Baitcasting Reel incorporates several design elements for durability and performance:

  • Aluminum Body and Side Covers: Provides a durable and rigid structure, enhancing the reel's lifespan.
  • Precision Machined Brass Gear: Ensures smooth operation, increased strength, and reliable retrievals.
  • 8+1 Stainless Steel Bearings: Contributes to smooth casting and retrieving, with instant anti-reverse for solid hooksets. Two of these are high-quality Japan NMB bearings.
  • Magnetic Brake System: Offers adjustable casting control to minimize backlash.
  • Corrosion Resistant Components: Suitable for use in both freshwater and saltwater environments.
  • Lengthened Metal Rocker Arm with EVA Handle Knobs: Designed for comfortable grip and reduced fatigue during extended fishing sessions.
  • Stainless Steel Spindle: Reinforces the spool for increased strength and durability.

4. Initial Setup

4.1 Spooling Fishing Line

  1. Attach the reel securely to your fishing rod.
  2. Thread the fishing line through the rod guides, starting from the tip and working towards the reel.
  3. Tie the line to the reel spool using an arbor knot or a similar secure knot. Ensure the knot is tight.
  4. Close the bail (if applicable) or engage the line guide.
  5. Maintain light tension on the line as you slowly reel it onto the spool. Ensure the line lays evenly across the spool. Do not overfill the spool; leave a small gap from the edge.

4.2 Magnetic Brake Adjustment

The magnetic brake system helps control spool rotation during casting, reducing backlash. Adjustments are made via the dial on the side plate.

  1. Locate the magnetic brake adjustment dial on the side of the reel.
  2. For initial setup, set the dial to a higher number (e.g., 7-9) for maximum braking, especially if you are new to baitcasting reels.
  3. As you gain experience, you can gradually reduce the braking force by turning the dial to a lower number to achieve longer casts.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Casting

  1. Press the thumb bar to disengage the spool.
  2. Hold the rod and reel in a comfortable casting position.
  3. Initiate your cast. As the lure travels, keep your thumb lightly on the spool to prevent excessive overrun (backlash).
  4. Just before the lure hits the water, apply firm thumb pressure to stop the spool, preventing line tangles.
  5. Engage the reel by turning the handle to prepare for retrieval.

5.2 Drag Adjustment

The drag system controls the amount of force required to pull line from the reel, preventing line breakage when fighting a fish.

  • Locate the star drag adjustment knob, typically positioned near the handle.
  • Turn the star drag clockwise to increase drag tension (make it harder for line to pull out).
  • Turn the star drag counter-clockwise to decrease drag tension (make it easier for line to pull out).
  • Set the drag tension appropriate for your line strength and target fish. A common guideline is to set the drag to approximately 25-30% of your line's breaking strength.

5.3 Retrieving

To retrieve your line, simply turn the handle. The 6.3:1 gear ratio provides a balanced retrieve speed suitable for various lure presentations.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your JOHNCOO ARES Baitcasting Reel.

6.1 After Each Use

  • Rinse: If used in saltwater, lightly rinse the reel with fresh water to remove salt residue. Avoid spraying directly into bearings or drag system.
  • Dry: Thoroughly dry the reel with a soft cloth.
  • Inspect: Check for any loose parts, nicks in the line, or unusual wear.

6.2 Periodic Maintenance (Monthly or Seasonally)

  • Lubrication: Apply a small amount of high-quality reel oil to moving parts such as the handle knobs, worm gear, and spool shaft. Use reel grease on main gears if disassembling.
  • Cleaning: Use a soft brush or cotton swab to clean any accumulated dirt or debris from accessible areas.
  • Storage: Store the reel in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Loosen the drag completely before storage to prolong the life of the drag washers.

7. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your baitcasting reel.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Frequent BacklashMagnetic brake set too low; spool tension too loose; improper casting technique.Increase magnetic brake setting. Adjust spool tension knob so the lure falls slowly. Practice casting technique, keeping thumb on spool.
Stiff or Grinding HandleLack of lubrication; dirt/debris in gears; damaged bearings.Clean and lubricate gears and bearings. If problem persists, professional service may be required.
Drag Slips or SticksDrag washers are dry, dirty, or worn; drag set too loose.Clean and lightly grease drag washers (if applicable). Tighten drag setting. Replace worn washers.
Line Does Not Lay EvenlyWorm gear or line guide obstructed; line guide not moving.Clean the worm gear and line guide area. Ensure the line guide moves freely.
