1. Introduction
Product Overview
The Crosman 2240 is a single-shot, bolt-action .22 caliber air pistol designed for precision and marksmanship. It is powered by a 12-gram CO2 cartridge (not included) and delivers pellets at speeds up to 460 feet per second. Featuring an ergonomically designed ambidextrous grip, this pistol offers excellent balance and is ideal for skill development, target practice, plinking, and small game hunting.
Important Safety Information
Always handle the Crosman 2240 with extreme care. Treat every airgun as if it were loaded. Read and understand all instructions before use. Always wear safety glasses when handling or shooting an airgun. Ensure your target area is safe and free from obstructions or potential ricochet hazards. Keep fingers off the trigger until ready to fire. Store the airgun unloaded and decocked, and keep CO2 cartridges and pellets separate from the airgun.
Legal Disclaimer: CO2 Cartridges are not included and must be purchased separately.
2. Setup
Installing the CO2 Cartridge
- Ensure the pistol is unloaded and the safety is engaged.
- Locate the CO2 cartridge cap at the front underside of the barrel. Unscrew this cap counter-clockwise until it is fully removed.
- Insert a 12-gram CO2 cartridge into the chamber, narrow end first.
- Carefully screw the CO2 cartridge cap back on clockwise. As you tighten, you will hear a slight hiss as the cartridge is punctured and the system becomes pressurized. Continue tightening until snug, but do not overtighten.

Loading Pellets
- With the safety engaged, pull the bolt action handle (located on the right side of the receiver) fully to the rear until it locks open. This exposes the breech.
- Carefully insert one .22 caliber pellet into the breech, ensuring the skirt (flat end) of the pellet is facing the rear of the pistol.
- Push the bolt action handle forward until it clicks into place, seating the pellet firmly in the barrel. The pistol is now loaded.

3. Operating Instructions
Engaging and Disengaging the Safety
The Crosman 2240 features a cross-bolt safety located just above the trigger. To engage the safety (SAFE), push the button from the right side of the pistol until the red ring is no longer visible. To disengage the safety (FIRE), push the button from the left side until the red ring is visible. Always keep the safety engaged until you are ready to fire.
Firing the Pistol
- Ensure the pistol is loaded with a pellet and a CO2 cartridge is installed.
- Aim the pistol at a safe and appropriate target.
- Disengage the safety (red ring visible).
- Place your finger on the trigger and apply steady pressure until the pistol fires. The trigger pull is designed for precision, requiring a deliberate action.

4. Maintenance
General Cleaning
Regular cleaning is essential for maintaining the performance and longevity of your Crosman 2240. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to wipe down the exterior of the pistol after each use to remove dirt, dust, and fingerprints. For the barrel, use a .22 caliber cleaning kit with appropriate cleaning patches and a cleaning rod. Push the cleaning rod from the breech end towards the muzzle. Avoid using harsh chemicals that could damage the finish or internal components.
Lubrication
Apply 1-2 drops of Crosman Pellgunoil (or a similar airgun-specific lubricant) to the tip of each new CO2 cartridge before insertion. This helps to lubricate the seals and prevent air leaks. Additionally, apply a drop of Pellgunoil to the rubber O-ring exposed when the bolt is pulled back, approximately every 250 shots, to ensure smooth operation and seal integrity.
5. Troubleshooting Common Issues
- Loss of CO2 Pressure: Ensure the CO2 cartridge is fully tightened and that the seals are properly lubricated. A worn or damaged seal may need replacement.
- Pellet Not Firing: Verify that a CO2 cartridge is installed and pressurized, the pellet is correctly seated in the breech, and the safety is disengaged.
- Inaccurate Shots: Check that the barrel is clean and free of obstructions. Ensure you are using the correct .22 caliber pellets. Consistent shooting technique and proper sight alignment are also crucial for accuracy.
- Difficulty with Bolt Action: Apply a small amount of airgun lubricant to the bolt mechanism to ensure smooth movement.
