Installation
1. Pre-Installation
- Turn off power: Locate the circuit breaker or fuse that controls your heating system and turn it OFF. Verify that the power is off using a voltage tester.
- Remove old thermostat: Carefully remove your existing thermostat from the wall. Note how the wires are connected.
- Check compatibility: Ensure your heating system is compatible with a line voltage thermostat (120V, 240V, or 277V). This thermostat is suitable for electric baseboard or radiant electric heating systems.
- Mounting location: Install the thermostat on an inside wall, approximately 5 feet (1.5 meters) above the floor. Avoid locations near heat sources (lamps, sunlight, fireplaces), drafts (windows, doors), or unheated areas (outside walls). This thermostat requires a standard wall outlet box for mounting.
2. Wiring Instructions
IMPORTANT: All wiring must conform to local and national electrical codes. If you are unsure about any part of the wiring process, consult a qualified electrician.
The Robertshaw 802 is a Double-Pole, Single-Throw (DPST) thermostat, meaning it has four wires (two red, two black) and provides a positive "OFF" position by disconnecting both sides of the line voltage.
- Identify wires: You will have two wires coming from your power source (line) and two wires going to your heating unit (load).
- Connect power wires: Connect one power source wire to one of the thermostat's red wires. Connect the other power source wire to one of the thermostat's black wires.
- Connect load wires: Connect the remaining red thermostat wire to one of the heating unit wires. Connect the remaining black thermostat wire to the other heating unit wire.
- Secure connections: Use appropriate wire connectors (not included) to ensure all connections are tight and secure. Push excess wire carefully into the junction box.
3. Mounting
- Align the thermostat with the standard wall outlet box.
- Secure the thermostat to the outlet box using the two provided mounting screws. Do not overtighten.
- Ensure the thermostat is flush against the wall.
- Restore power at the main service panel.
Operation
