2. Product Overview
The Amcrest AMDV5108-AI is a Pentabrid AI DVR designed for advanced surveillance. It supports HDCVI, AHD, TVI, CVBS, and Analog View, allowing recording in 4K UltraHD resolution. This DVR integrates advanced AI features such as Face Detection & Recognition, Perimeter Protection, and Smart Motion Detection for enhanced security monitoring.

Human & Vehicle Detection
The Smart Motion Detection feature allows the DVR to differentiate between human and vehicle movements, reducing false alerts caused by environmental factors like leaves or animals. This ensures you receive only relevant notifications.

Face Detection & Perimeter Protection
The DVR can detect and recognize faces, aiding in identification. Perimeter Protection features like Tripwire and Intrusion allow you to define virtual boundaries and trigger events when humans or vehicles cross these lines or enter specific areas.

Connectivity and Compatibility
This DVR is compatible with a wide range of Amcrest Analog security cameras (2MP, 3MP, 4MP, 5MP, and 8MP) and select third-party ONVIF IP cameras. It utilizes coaxial cabling for video, audio, and PTZ control, simplifying installation.

3. Setup and Installation
3.1 Hard Drive Installation (Optional)
The DVR does not include a hard drive. For continuous recording, install a compatible SATA hard drive (up to 16TB). Refer to the full user manual for detailed instructions on opening the DVR casing and securely installing the hard drive.
3.2 Connecting Your System
- Connect Cameras: Connect your analog security cameras to the BNC video input ports on the back of the DVR using coaxial cables.
- Connect Display: Connect a monitor or TV to the HDMI or VGA output port on the back of the DVR.
- Connect Network: Connect an Ethernet cable from the DVR's Ethernet port to your router or network switch for remote viewing capabilities.
- Connect USB Mouse: Connect the included USB mouse to one of the USB ports for navigation.
- Power On: Connect the power adapter to the DC Power Input port and plug it into a power outlet. The DVR will power on automatically.
3.3 Initial Configuration
Upon first boot, the DVR will guide you through an initial setup wizard. This includes setting the date/time, network settings, and creating an administrator password. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the setup.
4. Operating Your DVR
4.1 Live View
After setup, the DVR will display the live view from connected cameras. You can switch between single-camera view and multi-camera grid views using the on-screen display (OSD) controls.
4.2 Recording Modes
The DVR supports various recording modes:
- Manual Recording: Start and stop recording manually.
- Scheduled Recording: Set specific times for continuous recording.
- Motion Detection Recording: Records only when motion is detected.
- Alarm Recording: Records when an external alarm input is triggered.
Configure these settings through the DVR's OSD menu.
4.3 AI Features Configuration
Access the AI menu in the DVR's OSD to configure:
- Face Detection/Recognition: Enable and set parameters for facial analysis.
- Perimeter Protection: Draw Tripwire lines and Intrusion areas on camera feeds.
- Smart Motion Detection: Adjust sensitivity and define detection zones for human and vehicle filtering. Note: Smart Motion Detection can only be activated if face detection or other AI rules are disabled for the same channel.
4.4 Playback and Backup
Use the playback function in the OSD to review recorded footage. You can search by date, time, and event type (e.g., motion, alarm, AI events). Footage can be backed up to a USB drive connected to the DVR's USB port.
4.5 Remote Viewing with Amcrest View Pro App
The Amcrest View Pro app allows you to view live feeds and recorded footage remotely on your smartphone or tablet. The app is available for free on the App Store (iOS) and Play Store (Android).

To set up remote viewing:
- Download and install the Amcrest View Pro app.
- Open the app and add your DVR by scanning the QR code displayed on the DVR's monitor (found in the network settings) or by manually entering its details.
- Ensure your DVR is connected to the internet.
5. Maintenance
5.1 Hard Drive Management
Regularly check the hard drive status through the DVR's OSD menu. If the hard drive becomes full, the DVR will typically overwrite the oldest footage. You can configure this behavior in the recording settings.
5.2 Firmware Updates
Periodically check the Amcrest website for firmware updates. Keeping your DVR's firmware up-to-date ensures optimal performance, security, and access to new features. Follow the instructions provided with the firmware update package carefully.
5.3 Cleaning
Clean the exterior of the DVR with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosols, as they may damage the internal components.
6. Troubleshooting
6.1 No Video Output
- Ensure the DVR is powered on and the power indicator LED is lit.
- Check HDMI/VGA cable connections to both the DVR and the monitor.
- Verify the monitor input source is correctly selected (HDMI/VGA).
6.2 No Camera Image
- Confirm cameras are powered on and their power adapters are working.
- Check BNC cable connections between cameras and the DVR.
- Ensure the camera type is compatible with the DVR (HDCVI, AHD, TVI, CVBS, or supported IP).
6.3 Remote Viewing Not Working
- Verify the DVR is connected to the internet (check network LED).
- Ensure correct network settings (DHCP enabled or static IP configured).
- Check firewall settings on your router; port forwarding may be required for direct access (though P2P via app usually bypasses this).
- Confirm correct device details (Serial Number, username, password) entered in the Amcrest View Pro app.
6.4 Hard Drive Not Detected
- Ensure the hard drive is correctly installed and connected to the SATA power and data cables inside the DVR.
- Verify the hard drive is functional by testing it in another device if possible.
- Format the hard drive through the DVR's OSD menu if it's a new installation.
