3. Initial Setup and First Use

Before using your espresso machine for the first time, follow these steps to prepare it for operation.

  1. Unpacking: Remove all packaging materials and ensure all components are present.
  2. Cleaning: Wash the water tank, portafilter, and filter baskets with warm water and mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly.
  3. Fill Water Tank: Fill the removable water tank with fresh, cold water up to the MAX level. Place it back securely.
  4. Power Connection: Plug the appliance into a suitable power outlet (220-240V / 50-60Hz).
  5. Prime the System:
    • Place a container under the coffee dispenser.
    • Turn the function selector dial to the coffee cup symbol (espresso function).
    • The indicator light will flash, then illuminate steadily when ready.
    • Turn the dial to the hot water/steam symbol to dispense water until a steady stream flows. This purges air from the system.
    • Turn the dial back to the 'Off' position.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Making Espresso

  1. Pre-heat: Turn the machine on. Allow it to heat up until the 'OK' light is steady. Place your cups on the cup warmer.
  2. Prepare Portafilter: Insert the desired filter basket (1 or 2 cups) into the portafilter. Add finely ground espresso coffee. For a single shot, use approximately 7g; for a double, use 14g. Level the coffee and tamp it firmly.
  3. Attach Portafilter: Attach the portafilter to the brewing head by aligning it and turning it firmly to the right until it is secure.
  4. Brew Coffee: Place one or two pre-heated cups under the portafilter spouts. Turn the function selector dial to the coffee cup symbol. Coffee will begin to dispense.
  5. Stop Brewing: Once the desired amount of espresso is brewed (typically 25-30ml for a single, 50-60ml for a double), turn the dial back to the 'Off' position.
  6. Remove Portafilter: Carefully remove the portafilter by turning it to the left. Discard the used coffee grounds.

4.2 Frothing Milk (Cappuccino/Latte)

  1. Prepare Steam: Ensure the machine is on and the 'OK' light is steady. Turn the function selector dial to the steam symbol. Wait for the 'OK' light to illuminate steadily again, indicating steam readiness.
  2. Prepare Milk: Fill a stainless steel frothing pitcher with cold milk (dairy or non-dairy) to about one-third full.
  3. Purge Steam Wand: Briefly open the steam knob to release any condensed water from the wand, then close it.
  4. Froth Milk: Immerse the steam wand tip just below the surface of the milk. Open the steam knob slowly. Move the pitcher up and down to create foam. Once the milk reaches the desired temperature and texture, close the steam knob and remove the pitcher.
  5. Clean Steam Wand: Immediately wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth to prevent milk residue from drying. Briefly open the steam knob again to clear any internal milk residue.
  6. Return to Coffee Mode: Turn the function selector dial back to the coffee cup symbol. If the 'OK' light flashes, turn the dial to the hot water/steam symbol and dispense water until the light is steady again. This cools the boiler for coffee brewing.

5. Cleaning and Maintenance

Regular cleaning ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your machine.

5.1 Daily Cleaning

5.2 Descaling

Descaling is crucial to remove mineral deposits and maintain machine efficiency. The frequency depends on water hardness and usage, but typically every 2-3 months.

  1. Prepare Descaling Solution: Mix a suitable descaling solution (e.g., De'Longhi descaler) with water according to the product instructions. Fill the water tank with this solution.
  2. Position Container: Place a large container under the coffee dispenser and the steam wand.
  3. Start Descaling: Turn the machine on. Once heated, turn the function selector dial to the coffee cup symbol and dispense about half of the solution through the coffee dispenser.
  4. Steam Wand Descaling: Turn the dial to the steam symbol and dispense the remaining solution through the steam wand.
  5. Rinse: Rinse the water tank thoroughly and fill it with fresh, cold water. Repeat steps 3 and 4 with fresh water to rinse the internal circuits.
  6. Power Off: Turn the machine off and unplug it.
