5. Setup
5.1. Battery Installation
The camera requires two AA batteries to power the flash and metering system.
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the bottom of the camera.
- Open the cover by sliding or twisting it according to the indicator.
- Insert two fresh AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
- Close the battery compartment cover securely.
5.2. Film Loading
The Yashica MF-2 Super uses 35mm film. Ensure you are in a shaded area or indoors when loading film to prevent light exposure.
Image 5.1: A box of Kodak UltraMax 400 color negative film, indicating 24 exposures. This type of 35mm film is compatible with the camera.
- Open the camera back cover by pulling up the film rewind knob (usually located on the top left).
- Place a new 35mm film cartridge into the film chamber on the left side.
- Pull the film leader across to the take-up spool on the right side and insert the tip into one of the slots.
- Advance the film slightly using the film advance lever to ensure it catches securely on the take-up spool's teeth.
- Close the camera back cover firmly until it clicks.
- Advance the film two more times, pressing the shutter button each time, until the film counter shows "1". This ensures the exposed film leader is wound onto the take-up spool. The DX-coding system will automatically set the ISO.
6. Operating the Camera
6.1. Taking Photographs
- Look through the viewfinder to compose your shot.
- Press the shutter button halfway down to activate the metering system. If the red LED in the viewfinder lights up, it indicates potential underexposure, suggesting the use of flash or brighter lighting.
- Press the shutter button fully to take the picture.
- Advance the film using the film advance lever until it stops, preparing for the next shot.
6.2. Using the Pop-up Flash
The built-in flash is useful in low-light conditions or for fill-flash in bright sunlight.
- To activate the flash, slide the flash pop-up switch (refer to Image 4.2 for location). The flash unit will pop up.
- Wait a few seconds for the flash to charge. A ready light (if present, check camera for indicator) will illuminate when ready.
- Compose your shot and press the shutter button. The flash will fire automatically.
- To turn off the flash, gently push the flash unit back down until it locks into place.
6.3. Film Unloading
Once all exposures on the film roll have been taken (indicated by the film counter), it's time to rewind and unload the film.
- Press the film rewind release button (usually on the bottom of the camera).
- Turn the film rewind knob (on the top left) clockwise until you feel the tension release, indicating the film has been fully rewound into its cartridge.
- Open the camera back cover.
- Remove the film cartridge and store it properly for development.
7. Maintenance
- Cleaning the Lens: Use a soft, lint-free cloth specifically designed for camera lenses. Do not use abrasive materials or harsh chemicals.
- Cleaning the Camera Body: Wipe the camera body with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, slightly dampen the cloth with water.
- Storage: When not in use, store the camera in a cool, dry place, away from dust and direct sunlight. Remove batteries if storing for an extended period to prevent leakage.
- Film Handling: Always handle film in subdued light. Avoid touching the film surface.
8. Troubleshooting
- Camera not powering on/flash not working: Check battery installation and ensure batteries are fresh.
- Film not advancing: Ensure film is correctly loaded onto the take-up spool. Check if the film counter is stuck.
- Red LED in viewfinder lights up: This indicates underexposure. Use the flash or move to a brighter environment.
- Film rewind knob feels stiff: Ensure the film rewind release button is pressed before attempting to rewind.
