2. Safety Instructions

Always prioritize safety when operating the engine. Failure to follow these instructions can result in serious injury or property damage.

  • Read the Manual: Understand all instructions and warnings before use.
  • Ventilation: Operate the engine in a well-ventilated area. Exhaust fumes contain carbon monoxide, which is a colorless, odorless, and deadly gas.
  • Fuel Handling: Handle gasoline with extreme care. It is highly flammable. Refuel in a well-ventilated area with the engine off and cool. Do not smoke while refueling.
  • Oil Level: Ensure the engine oil level is correct before each use. The engine is equipped with an oil shortage safety feature that stops the engine if the oil level is too low.
  • Hot Surfaces: The engine and exhaust system become very hot during operation and remain hot for a while after shutdown. Avoid contact to prevent burns.
  • Protective Gear: Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety glasses and gloves, when operating or maintaining the engine.
  • Children and Pets: Keep children and pets away from the engine during operation.
  • Stability: Ensure the engine is placed on a stable, level surface during operation to prevent tipping.

4. Setup

Before starting the engine for the first time, perform the following setup steps:

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove the engine from its packaging. Inspect for any shipping damage.
  2. Mounting: Securely mount the engine to your equipment (e.g., go-kart, generator, lawnmower) using appropriate fasteners. Refer to the engine diagram for mounting points and dimensions.
  3. Add Engine Oil: The engine is shipped without oil. Fill the crankcase with suitable 4-stroke engine oil (e.g., SAE 10W-30) up to the upper mark on the dipstick. Do not overfill. The oil capacity is typically around 0.6 liters.
  4. Checking oil level with dipstick

  7. Connect Components: If applicable, connect any external components such as throttle cables or electrical connections according to your equipment's instructions.

5. Operating Instructions

Starting the Engine:

  1. Fuel Valve: Open the fuel valve (if present) to allow fuel flow to the carburetor.
  2. Choke: If starting a cold engine, move the choke lever to the "CLOSED" or "START" position. For a warm engine, the choke may not be necessary.
  3. Throttle: Set the throttle lever to the "FAST" or "START" position.
  4. Engine Switch: Turn the engine switch to the "ON" position.
  5. Starting the engine with pull cord

Figure 5: Pulling the starter cord to start the engine.

  6. Pull Starter: Grasp the starter grip and pull it slowly until you feel resistance, then pull it quickly and firmly. Allow the rope to retract slowly. Repeat until the engine starts.
  7. Choke Adjustment: Once the engine starts, gradually move the choke lever to the "OPEN" or "RUN" position as the engine warms up.

Stopping the Engine:

  1. Throttle: Move the throttle lever to the "SLOW" or "IDLE" position.
  2. Engine Switch: Turn the engine switch to the "OFF" position.
  3. Fuel Valve: Close the fuel valve (if present).

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and optimal performance of your EBERTH engine. Always ensure the engine is off and cool before performing any maintenance.

Maintenance Schedule:

  • Before Each Use: Check engine oil level, check fuel level, inspect for loose fasteners or leaks.
  • Every 25 Hours or Annually: Clean air filter, inspect spark plug.
  • Every 50 Hours or Annually: Change engine oil.
  • Every 100 Hours or Annually: Inspect fuel filter (if accessible), clean cooling fins.

Detailed Maintenance Steps:

  1. Oil Change: Place a suitable container under the oil drain plug. Remove the drain plug and the oil fill cap/dipstick to allow the oil to drain completely. Reinstall the drain plug and refill with new, recommended 4-stroke engine oil.
  2. Checking oil level

Figure 6: Checking the oil level before operation.

  3. Air Filter Cleaning: Remove the air filter cover and carefully remove the air filter element. Clean it with compressed air or wash it in warm, soapy water, then allow it to dry completely. Reinstall the clean filter.
  4. Cleaning the air filter
