Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of your InSinkErator garbage disposal and power cord kit. The Badger 5 features a patented Quick Lock sink mount system designed for straightforward installation and disposal replacement, compatible with existing InSinkErator hardware.

Garbage Disposal Installation:

  1. Preparation: Ensure the power supply to the disposal area is turned off at the circuit breaker. Clear the under-sink cabinet area.
  2. Mounting Assembly: Attach the Quick Lock sink mount assembly to the sink flange. This system simplifies the connection of the disposal unit to the sink.
  3. Electrical Connection: Connect the disposal's wiring to the power source. If using the CRD-00 Power Cord Kit, ensure the smooth side of the cord is connected to the black wire of the disposer and the ribbed side to the white wire. The cord should be properly grounded to the ground screw of the disposer.
  4. Drain Connection: Connect the disposal's discharge tube to your household drain line. Ensure all connections are secure and leak-free.
  5. Final Check: Once installed, double-check all connections for tightness and ensure no leaks are present before restoring power.

  1. Access Wiring Compartment: Locate and open the wiring compartment on the bottom of the garbage disposal unit.
  2. Secure Strain Relief: Install the provided strain relief clamp into the opening of the wiring compartment.
  3. Connect Wires: Feed the power cord through the strain relief. Use the wire connectors to securely connect the power cord wires to the corresponding wires inside the disposal's wiring compartment. The smooth side of the power cord should connect to the black wire of the disposer, and the ribbed side to the white wire. Ensure the ground wire is connected to the ground screw.
  4. Close Compartment: Close the wiring compartment cover securely.

Operating Instructions

The InSinkErator Badger 5 is a continuous feed garbage disposal, designed for ease of use and efficient food waste management.

Daily Operation:

  1. Turn on Water: Before activating the disposal, turn on a medium stream of cold water. Cold water helps to solidify greases and oils, allowing them to be flushed away more easily.
  2. Activate Disposal: Flip the wall switch to turn on the disposal. You will hear the motor begin to hum.
  3. Feed Food Waste: Slowly feed food scraps into the sink opening. Avoid overloading the disposal.
  4. Continue Water Flow: Allow the cold water to run for approximately 15-20 seconds after the grinding sound stops to ensure all food particles are flushed through the drain.
  5. Turn off Disposal: Turn off the disposal using the wall switch.
  6. Turn off Water: Turn off the water.

What NOT to Put in Your Disposal:

  • Large bones (e.g., beef, pork)
  • Fibrous materials (e.g., corn husks, celery stalks, artichokes)
  • Grease, fats, or oils (pour into a separate container and dispose of in trash)
  • Coffee grounds (can accumulate and cause clogs)
  • Pasta, rice, or potato peels (can expand and cause clogs)
  • Non-food items (e.g., plastic, metal, glass, paper)

Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your InSinkErator Badger 5 garbage disposal. The unit features durable galvanized steel components designed for lasting use.

  • Regular Flushing: Always run cold water for 15-20 seconds after grinding to flush all food particles through the drain.
  • Clean Regularly: To clean the disposal and remove odors, grind small pieces of citrus peels (lemon, lime, orange) or ice cubes. This helps to clean the grinding chamber and loosen any buildup.
  • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Do not use caustic drain cleaners, as they can damage the disposal and plumbing.
  • Check for Leaks: Periodically inspect the disposal and plumbing connections for any signs of leaks.
