Yakima EXO DoubleUp 2-Bike Carrier Instruction Manual

Model: 8002722

1. Introduction

The Yakima EXO DoubleUp is a modular 2-bike hitch carrier designed for seamless integration with the Yakima EXO System, specifically the EXO SwingBase or the elevated EXO TopShelf. This carrier provides a secure and versatile solution for transporting two bicycles, allowing for additional gear storage below when used with the EXO TopShelf. It accommodates various bike types, including road, mountain, and fat tire bikes, ensuring a reliable transport experience.

2. Safety Information

  • Maximum Load Capacity: Do not exceed the stated maximum load capacity of 80 lbs (36.3 kg) for the EXO DoubleUp. Exceeding this limit, especially with heavy e-bikes, can compromise stability and lead to damage or accidents.
  • Secure Attachment: Always ensure the EXO DoubleUp is securely attached to the EXO SwingBase or EXO TopShelf according to the installation instructions. Verify all fasteners are tightened before each use.
  • Bike Securing: Ensure all bikes are properly secured using the wheel cradles and frame clamps. Utilize the integrated cable lock for added security.
  • Regular Checks: Periodically check all connections and bike security during travel, especially on long trips or rough terrain.
  • Vehicle Clearance: Be aware of the increased length and width of your vehicle when the carrier is installed and loaded. Exercise caution when backing up or maneuvering in tight spaces.

3. Package Contents

4. Setup and Installation

The EXO DoubleUp is designed for tool-free installation onto an existing Yakima EXO SwingBase or EXO TopShelf.

  1. Prepare the EXO System: Ensure your EXO SwingBase or EXO TopShelf is securely installed on your vehicle's hitch receiver.
  2. Align the Carrier: Position the EXO DoubleUp over the attachment points on the EXO SwingBase or EXO TopShelf. The carrier's arms must align with the corresponding slots.
  3. Engage Attachment Points: Gently lower the EXO DoubleUp onto the EXO System. It may require a slight wiggling motion to ensure all attachment points fully engage.
  4. Secure the Carrier: Once aligned, use the integrated knobs or levers to firmly secure the EXO DoubleUp to the EXO System. Tighten until snug, ensuring there is no play or movement.
  5. Final Check: Before loading bikes, perform a final check to confirm the carrier is rigidly attached to the EXO System.

5. Operating Instructions

Loading and securing your bikes on the EXO DoubleUp is designed for ease and security.

  1. Position Bikes: Place each bike into the designated wheel cradles. The carrier is compatible with various wheel sizes and tire widths.
  2. Secure Wheels: Use the integrated straps to firmly secure the wheels in their cradles. Ensure the straps are tight to prevent wheel movement.
  3. Clamp Frame: Extend the adjustable frame clamps and position them around the bike frame. Tighten the clamps until the bike is held firmly in place without excessive pressure on the frame.
  4. Utilize Cable Lock: For enhanced security, use the integrated cable lock to secure the bikes to the carrier. Pass the cable through the bike frames and wheels, then lock it into the carrier.
  5. Verify Security: Before driving, gently shake each bike to confirm it is securely mounted and there is no excessive movement.

6. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Clean the carrier regularly with mild soap and water to remove dirt, road grime, and salt. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect all components for signs of wear, damage, or corrosion. Check all bolts, nuts, and fasteners for tightness. Replace any worn or damaged parts immediately.
  • Lubrication: Moving parts, such as the frame clamps and attachment mechanisms, may benefit from occasional lubrication with a silicone-based spray to ensure smooth operation.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the EXO DoubleUp in a dry, protected area to prolong its lifespan.

7. Troubleshooting

  • Issue: Excessive rack movement or sway during travel.
Solution: Ensure all attachment points to the EXO SwingBase or TopShelf are fully engaged and tightened. Verify that the total weight of the bikes does not exceed the 80 lbs (36.3 kg) load capacity. Re-check bike securing straps and frame clamps.
  • Issue: Difficulty aligning the EXO DoubleUp with the EXO SwingBase/TopShelf during installation.
Solution: Ensure the EXO System is level and stable. A slight wiggling motion of the EXO DoubleUp may be necessary to help the arms align and engage properly with the base unit. Do not force the connection.
  • Issue: Bikes not feeling secure after clamping.
Solution: Re-adjust the wheel cradles and frame clamps. Ensure the frame clamps are tightened sufficiently without damaging the bike frame. Confirm wheel straps are taut.
