Desktop Installation:

  • Attach the included rubber feet to the bottom of the switch.
  • Place the switch on a flat, stable surface in a well-ventilated area.
  • Ensure adequate space around the switch for proper airflow.

Rackmount Installation:

  • Attach the two rackmount brackets to the sides of the switch using the provided screws.
  • Secure the switch into a standard 19-inch rack using appropriate rack screws (not included).

4.3 Step 3: Connect Power

Connect the provided AC power cord to the power input on the rear panel of the switch and then to a power outlet. Ensure the power source meets the switch's voltage requirements (100-240V~, 50/60Hz, 0.5A).

4.4 Step 4: Connect Network Devices

Connect your network devices (e.g., PCs, servers, other switches, access points) to the RJ45 ports (1-24) using Ethernet cables. For high-bandwidth connections, use SFP+ transceivers and fiber optic cables in the 10G SFP+ ports (25-28).

4.5 Step 5: Initial Configuration Access

The switch can be configured via a web-based Graphical User Interface (GUI) or through a Command Line Interface (CLI) using the console ports.

Web-based GUI:

  • Connect a PC to any RJ45 port on the switch.
  • Configure your PC's IP address to be in the same subnet as the switch's default IP address (refer to the Quick Installation Guide for default IP).
  • Open a web browser and enter the switch's default IP address.
  • Log in using the default username and password (refer to the Quick Installation Guide).

Console Port (CLI):

  • Connect a console cable (RJ45-to-DB9 or Micro-USB cable) from your PC to the switch's console port.
  • Use a terminal emulation program (e.g., PuTTY, Tera Term) with appropriate serial port settings (e.g., 115200 baud rate, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, no flow control).

4.6 Step 6: Omada SDN Integration

The TL-SG3428X is designed to integrate seamlessly with TP-Link's Omada SDN platform for centralized management. This allows for unified control of switches, access points, and gateways from a single interface.

Figure 4.1: Overview of the Omada SDN platform, illustrating how the Jetstream switch integrates with Omada Access Points, Routers, and various controller options (Hardware, Software, Cloud).

To integrate with Omada SDN:

  • Ensure your Omada Controller (Hardware, Software, or Cloud-based) is set up and accessible.
  • Access the Omada Controller interface and follow the instructions to 'Adopt' the switch into your network.
  • For optimal performance, ensure the Omada Controller's firmware is up to date before adopting new devices.

5. Operating the Switch

5.1 Basic Network Connectivity

Once powered on and connected, the switch will automatically provide basic network connectivity to connected devices. For advanced network configurations, use the web GUI or CLI.

5.2 Advanced Features

5.2.1 10G SFP+ Uplinks

The 4x 10GE SFP+ slots provide high-bandwidth uplink capabilities, crucial for connecting to core network devices or servers requiring high data throughput. These ports ensure non-blocking switching performance for demanding applications.

Figure 5.1: Illustration of the 10G uplink capability, demonstrating enhanced speed for enterprise networks.

5.2.2 L2+ Features

The switch supports a range of Layer 2+ features to optimize network performance and security:

  • Static Routing: Facilitates efficient routing of internal traffic, improving network resource utilization.
  • 802.1Q VLAN: Allows for network segmentation, creating isolated broadcast domains to enhance security and manageability.
  • Quality of Service (QoS): Prioritizes network traffic to ensure critical applications (e.g., VoIP, video streaming) receive sufficient bandwidth.
  • IGMP Snooping: Optimizes multicast traffic delivery, preventing unnecessary flooding of multicast packets to all ports.
  • Link Aggregation Group (LAG): Combines multiple physical links into a single logical link for increased bandwidth and redundancy.

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of your switch.

  • Firmware Updates: Periodically check the TP-Link website for the latest firmware versions. Updating firmware can provide new features, performance improvements, and security patches.
  • Cleaning: Keep the switch clean and free of dust. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning. Ensure ventilation openings are not obstructed.
  • Environmental Conditions: Operate the switch within the specified temperature and humidity ranges to prevent damage. Ensure proper ventilation to avoid overheating.
  • Configuration Backup: Regularly back up your switch configuration to prevent data loss in case of unexpected issues.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your TL-SG3428X switch, consider the following troubleshooting steps:

  • No Power: Ensure the power cord is securely connected to both the switch and a working power outlet. Check the power LED indicator.
  • No Link/Activity on Port: Verify that the Ethernet cable is properly connected at both ends. Check the link/activity LED for the respective port. Ensure the connected device is powered on and functioning correctly.
  • Cannot Access Web GUI: Confirm your PC's IP address is in the same subnet as the switch. Clear your browser's cache or try a different browser. Verify the switch's IP address.
  • Console Port Issues: Ensure the correct console cable is used and securely connected. Verify the serial port settings in your terminal emulation program. Some older hardware versions may require specific unsigned drivers for USB console ports on certain operating systems.
  • Omada SDN Adoption Failure: Ensure the Omada Controller's firmware is up to date. Verify network connectivity between the switch and the controller. Ensure the switch is not already adopted by another controller.
  • Network Performance Issues: Check for network loops, excessive broadcast traffic, or misconfigured VLANs. Utilize QoS settings to prioritize critical traffic.

If problems persist, consult the TP-Link support website or contact technical support.
