4. Setup and Installation

The Mishimoto MMOC-OO-10SL is a universal oil cooler designed for custom applications. Installation will vary depending on your specific vehicle and setup. The following steps provide general guidance.

  1. Planning and Mounting:

Identify a suitable mounting location for the oil cooler that allows for optimal airflow and clearance from other engine components. The cooler features eight M8 flush mounting points with steel threaded inserts for secure attachment to custom brackets (not included). Ensure the mounting location is robust enough to support the cooler's weight and withstand vehicle vibrations.

  2. Fluid Line Routing:

The cooler features -16AN female threaded inlet and outlet ports on opposite sides for simplified line routing. Plan the routing of your oil lines to and from the engine/oil filter relocation kit, ensuring lines are not kinked, pinched, or exposed to excessive heat or abrasion. Use appropriate -16AN fittings and hoses (not included) for a secure and leak-free connection.

  3. Connection and Tightening:

Connect all oil lines to the cooler and the engine/oil filter relocation kit. Hand-tighten all fittings first, then use appropriate wrenches to tighten them securely. It is critical to ensure all connections are fully tightened to prevent leaks.

  4. Fluid Fill and Bleeding:

After installation, refill your engine oil to the manufacturer's recommended level. Start the engine and allow it to idle, checking for any leaks around the cooler and fittings. Monitor oil pressure and temperature. If necessary, bleed any air from the system according to your vehicle's service manual or oil system specifications.

5. Operating Principles

The Mishimoto MMOC-OO-10SL oil cooler operates on the principle of forced convection. Engine oil flows through the internal passages of the bar-and-plate core, which is designed with turbulated fins to evenly circulate oil and maximize heat transfer. As air passes over the external fins of the cooler, heat is dissipated from the oil, maintaining optimal operating temperatures for the engine. This heavy-duty design ensures efficient cooling even under extreme conditions.

6. Maintenance

  • Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect the oil cooler and all associated lines and fittings for any signs of leaks, damage, or corrosion. Check for loose connections.
  • Cleaning: Keep the external fins of the cooler free from debris, dirt, and insects to ensure unrestricted airflow. Use compressed air or a soft brush to gently clean the fins. Avoid using high-pressure washers directly on the fins, as this can bend or damage them.
  • Fluid Checks: Regularly check your engine oil level and condition. Ensure the oil is clean and at the appropriate level as per your vehicle manufacturer's recommendations.

7. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Oil LeakageLoose fittings, damaged lines, cracked cooler core.Tighten all fittings. Inspect lines for damage and replace if necessary. If cooler core is damaged, contact Mishimoto support.
Insufficient Cooling (High Oil Temps)Blocked airflow to cooler, improper line routing, undersized cooler for application.Clean cooler fins. Re-route lines for better flow. Ensure cooler is appropriately sized for your engine's demands.
Low Oil PressureAir in system, severe leak, incorrect oil viscosity.Bleed air from system. Address any leaks immediately. Verify correct oil viscosity for your engine.
