Introduction
This instruction manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient operation of your RYOBI 16-inch 40-Volt Brushless Cordless Chainsaw. This tool is designed for cutting branches, small logs, and general yard maintenance. Please read this manual thoroughly before initial use and retain it for future reference.
Safety Information
Always prioritize safety when operating power tools. Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or property damage.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE): This includes safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and sturdy footwear.
- Understand your chainsaw: Familiarize yourself with all controls, safety features, and how to stop the machine quickly.
- Maintain a secure grip: Always hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands.
- Clear the work area: Ensure no bystanders, pets, or obstacles are in the cutting path.
- Be aware of kickback: Kickback can occur when the moving chain at the tip of the guide bar contacts an object, or when the wood closes in and pinches the saw chain in the cut.
- Proper chain tension: Incorrect chain tension can lead to the chain coming off the bar or excessive wear.
- Use in well-lit conditions: Avoid operating the chainsaw in poor lighting.
- Do not operate when fatigued or under the influence: Ensure you are well-rested and not impaired by drugs or alcohol.
Setup
Unboxing and Initial Inspection
Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Inspect the chainsaw for any signs of damage. Ensure all parts listed in the manual are present. The package typically includes the chainsaw body, guide bar, saw chain, and a bar cover.

Chain and Bar Installation
Before installing the chain and bar, ensure the battery is removed from the chainsaw. Place the guide bar onto the chainsaw studs. Carefully loop the saw chain around the drive sprocket and then guide it into the groove of the guide bar. Ensure the cutting edges of the chain teeth are facing the correct direction for cutting (away from the chainsaw body on the top side of the bar).

Chain Tensioning
The RYOBI chainsaw features side-access chain tensioning for easy adjustments. Once the chain and bar are in place, replace the side cover and hand-tighten the nuts. Use the tensioning screw to adjust the chain until it is snug against the guide bar but can still be pulled freely by hand. The chain should not sag from the bottom of the guide bar. Finally, fully tighten the side cover nuts.
Adding Bar and Chain Oil
Locate the oil reservoir cap on the chainsaw body. Unscrew the cap and fill the reservoir with high-quality bar and chain oil. The chainsaw is equipped with an automatic oiler system, which requires the reservoir to be filled before each use to ensure proper lubrication of the chain and bar during operation. Replace the cap securely.
Battery Installation
Insert a fully charged RYOBI 40V battery into the battery port on the chainsaw until it clicks into place. Ensure the battery is securely seated before operating the tool. To remove, press the battery release button and slide the battery out.
Operating Instructions
Starting the Chainsaw
With the battery installed and the chain brake disengaged (pulled back towards the front handle), press the safety lock-out button with your thumb and then squeeze the trigger switch. The chainsaw will start immediately. Release the safety lock-out button once the saw is running.
Cutting Techniques
Always maintain a balanced stance and firm grip. When cutting, allow the saw to do the work; do not force it. Start cuts with the bottom of the guide bar, allowing the chain to pull the saw into the wood. For larger branches or logs, make a relief cut on the underside first to prevent pinching. Be mindful of the wood's tension and potential for kickback.
Automatic Oiler and Chain Brake
The automatic oiler system continuously lubricates the chain and bar during operation, reducing friction and extending component life. Regularly check the oil level indicator to ensure sufficient oil. The mechanical chain brake is a critical safety feature. In the event of kickback, the chain brake is designed to stop the chain almost instantly, reducing the risk of injury. Always ensure the chain brake is functional before use.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your chainsaw.
- Clean after each use: Remove sawdust, debris, and any resin buildup from the guide bar, chain, and motor housing.
- Check chain tension: Inspect chain tension before each use and adjust as necessary.
- Sharpen the chain: A dull chain can cause poor cutting performance and increase the risk of kickback. Sharpen the chain regularly or replace it when necessary.
- Inspect the guide bar: Check for burrs, wear, or damage. Flip the guide bar periodically to ensure even wear.
- Store properly: When not in use, store the chainsaw with the bar cover in a dry, secure location out of reach of children. Remove the battery before storage.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
