4. Setup and Installation
4.1. Mounting the Tachometer
The tachometer can be mounted using either the provided 3M adhesive velcro or by screwing it into a suitable surface. Choose a position that is easily visible and accessible, away from excessive heat or vibration.
- Adhesive Mounting: Clean the mounting surface thoroughly. Apply the 3M adhesive velcro to the back of the tachometer and firmly press it onto the desired location.
- Screw Mounting: Use the provided screws, nuts, and washers to secure the tachometer to a flat surface. Ensure the mounting is stable.
4.2. Wiring for Engine Signal Detection
The tachometer detects engine RPM and hours by wrapping its signal wire around the spark plug wire of the engine. The wire length is approximately 68.8 inches and can be shortened or extended if necessary.
- Locate the spark plug wire on your engine.
- Wrap the signal wire from the tachometer around the spark plug wire 3-5 times. Ensure a snug fit.
- Secure the wrapped wire using the provided cable ties to prevent it from coming loose.
- Ensure the connection is secure and free from interference.

The tachometer is suitable for gas engines: 2-stroke up to 3 cylinders and 4-stroke up to 16 cylinders.
5. Operation
The tachometer features two main buttons: MENU and SET. These buttons are used to navigate through settings and confirm selections.
5.1. Hours Tracking (TOT & JOB)
- Total Hours (TOT): Accumulates the engine's total working hours. The timing reads up to 999,999 hours with 1 minute / 0.1 / 1 hour accuracy. TOT hours are non-resettable but will restart from 0 when the value exceeds 99,999 hours.
- Job Hours (JOB): Records the working time for a single operating period. This can be reset for each task.
- Initial Hours Setting: You can program initial TOT hours, useful when replacing an old hour meter.

Figure 5.1: Hours Display Modes.
5.2. RPM Measurement
- Real-time RPM: Displays the engine's real-time RPM value when the engine is running. Measurement range is 0-25000 RPM with 10 RPM resolution.
- Highest RPM (MAXRPM): Displays the highest RPM recorded since the engine started.
- RPM Alert: An extra alert channel for speed exceedance. The display will show a red backlight and a flashed warning icon when the set RPM limit is exceeded. Alert value range: 100-25000 RPM.
- RPM Accuracy Adjustment: The engine firing patterns and RPM measurement range can be chosen for accuracy adjustment. Refer to the table in Figure 4.1 for range selection.

Figure 5.2: RPM Display and Alert Function.
5.3. Backlight Display
The tachometer features a multi-color backlight for enhanced visibility and alerts:
- Green Backlight: Standard display, useful for night or dim conditions. Can be set to always-on, OFF, or automatic mode.
- Red Backlight: Activates to indicate an RPM exceed warning.
- Cyan Backlight: Displays when switching between operation systems DSP1 and DSP2.
5.4. ECO Mode
The ECO mode helps extend battery life. The battery capacity is preserved by an insulation sheet before use or during transport. The replaceable battery compartment and LCD shutdown feature also contribute to extending the lifetime during periods of inactivity.
5.5. User Data Storage
All user data, including accumulated hours and settings, will be retained even after the display shuts down or the battery is replaced.
5.6. Operation Flow (DSP-1 & DSP-2)
The device has two main operation systems, DSP-1 and DSP-2, which control various settings. Use the MENU and SET buttons to navigate and adjust parameters.

Figure 5.3: DSP-1 & DSP-2 Operation Flow.
DSP-1 (Default Mode):
- From the main display (e.g., TOT 0:00), press MENU to enter settings.
- The first setting is TOT. Press SET to adjust the initial TOT hours (e.g., "Set").
- Press MENU to move to JOB settings. Press SET to select "L-Auto" (likely for automatic job hour logging).
- Press MENU to move to SVC (Service Reminder). Press SET to toggle ON/OFF or set the service interval (e.g., "0").
- Press MENU to move to RPM alert. Press SET to toggle ON/OFF or set the alert value (e.g., "1").
- Press MENU to move to MAXRPM. Press SET to view or reset the maximum RPM recorded.
DSP-2 (Advanced Mode):
To switch to DSP-2, typically a long press of the MENU button or a specific key combination is required (not explicitly stated in the image, but implied by the flow). DSP-2 allows for more advanced settings, such as adjusting the engine firing pattern for RPM accuracy (e.g., "1P 1r" for 1 pulse per revolution).
Follow the on-screen prompts and the flow diagram in Figure 5.3 for detailed navigation and setting adjustments.
6. Maintenance
6.1. Maintenance Reminder (SVC)
The device features a count-down tracking for maintenance time (SVC timer). You can set a maintenance interval (range: 0-2000 hours). When the set time is reached, the device will remind you by flashing an icon.
To set or reset the SVC timer, navigate to the SVC setting in the operation flow (refer to Section 5.6).
6.2. Battery Replacement
The tachometer uses a replaceable CR2450 battery. When the display dims or stops functioning, it may be time to replace the battery.
- Locate the battery compartment on the back of the unit (refer to Figure 3.2).
- Carefully open the battery compartment cover.
- Remove the old CR2450 battery.
- Insert a new CR2450 battery, ensuring correct polarity (+ side up).
- Close the battery compartment cover securely.
⚠ Important: Dispose of old batteries responsibly and keep them out of reach of children.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Runleader Digital Tachometer, consider the following common troubleshooting steps:
- No Display / Dim Display:
- Check if the battery insulation sheet has been removed.
- Replace the CR2450 battery (refer to Section 6.2).
- Inaccurate RPM Reading:
- Ensure the signal wire is securely wrapped around the spark plug wire (3-5 turns recommended).
- Verify that the correct engine firing pattern and RPM measurement range are selected in the settings (refer to Section 5.6 and Figure 4.1).
- Ensure the signal wire is not damaged or experiencing interference.
- Hours Not Accumulating:
- Confirm the signal wire is properly connected and detecting engine activity.
- Check battery level.
- Buttons Unresponsive:
- Ensure the unit is not exposed to extreme temperatures.
- Try replacing the battery.
If problems persist, please contact customer support (refer to Section 9).
