4. Setup and Installation
Before installation, ensure you have all necessary tools and components. Refer to the wiring diagram for proper connections.
4.1 Battery Compatibility
The charger is compatible with the following 12V battery types:
- Flooded Lead-Acid
- Gel Lead-Acid
- AGM Lead-Acid
- Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4)

Figure 4.1: Compatible Battery Types
This image visually confirms the charger's compatibility with Flooded, Gel, AGM, and Lithium battery types.
4.2 Mounting the Charger
Choose a dry, well-ventilated location for mounting the charger. Ensure there is sufficient space around the unit for airflow and cable connections. Use appropriate fasteners to secure the charger firmly.
4.3 Wiring Connections
- Connect the positive terminal of the starter battery to the charger's input positive terminal.
- Connect the negative terminal of the starter battery to the charger's input negative terminal (ground).
- Connect the positive terminal of the auxiliary (house) battery to the charger's output positive terminal.
- Connect the negative terminal of the auxiliary (house) battery to the charger's output negative terminal (ground).
- For automatic power on/off with vehicle ignition, connect the D+ signal input to a switched ignition source.

This image illustrates the D+ signal input connection, which allows the charger to power on/off automatically with the vehicle's ignition, typically used in RV applications.
4.4 Configuring Charging Mode
The charger features DIP switches to configure the charging mode based on your battery type and desired current. Refer to the product manual for specific DIP switch settings for each battery chemistry (AGM, Flooded, Gel, Lithium) and current limit (30A/60A).

Figure 4.3: DIP Switch Configuration
This image shows the DIP switches on the side of the charger, used to configure the charging mode and current limit according to the type of battery being charged.
5. Operating Instructions
Once properly installed and configured, the Renogy DC-DC Battery Charger operates automatically.
5.1 Three-Stage Charging Algorithm
The charger employs a smart 3-stage charging algorithm to optimize battery health and lifespan:
- Bulk Stage: During this stage, the charger delivers 100% of the set charging current to rapidly bring the battery to approximately 80% of its capacity.
- Absorption Stage: Once the battery reaches a certain voltage, the charger switches to the absorption stage. The voltage remains constant, while the current gradually decreases. This stage typically lasts for a set period (e.g., 3 hours) to fully charge the battery.
- Float Stage: After the absorption stage, the charger enters the float stage. The voltage is reduced to a lower, constant level to maintain the battery at full charge without overcharging, compensating for self-discharge.

Figure 5.1: Charging Curve (Bulk, Absorption, Float)
This diagram illustrates the three charging stages: Bulk (constant current, rising voltage), Absorption (constant voltage, decreasing current), and Float (constant lower voltage for maintenance).
5.2 Automatic Operation
The charger will automatically begin charging the auxiliary battery when the vehicle's engine is running and the D+ signal is detected (if connected). It will stop charging when the engine is turned off, protecting the starter battery from discharge.
6. Maintenance
The Renogy DC-DC Battery Charger is designed for minimal maintenance. However, regular checks can ensure optimal performance and longevity.
- Periodic Inspection: Visually inspect the charger and all wiring connections for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
- Cleanliness: Keep the charger clean and free from dust and debris. Use a dry cloth to wipe down the exterior. Do not use liquid cleaners.
- Ventilation: Ensure that the ventilation openings are not obstructed to allow for proper heat dissipation.
- Battery Health: Periodically check the health and charge level of your auxiliary battery to ensure it is functioning correctly.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Renogy DC-DC Battery Charger, refer to the table below for common problems and solutions.
