2. Package Contents

Verify that all components are present in your package:

  • Two (2) MikroTik Wireless Wire nRAY devices
  • Two (2) Power Supplies
  • Two (2) PoE Injectors
  • Two (2) solidMOUNT precision mounts
  • Required mounting hardware

3. Safety Information

Please read and follow these safety guidelines before installing or operating the device:

  • Installation should be performed by qualified personnel in accordance with local electrical codes and regulations.
  • Ensure the device is powered off before performing any maintenance or installation procedures.
  • Use only the power supplies and PoE injectors provided or approved by MikroTik.
  • Do not expose the device to extreme temperatures, humidity, or direct water immersion.
  • Maintain a safe distance from power lines and other electrical hazards during installation.

4. Setup and Installation

The nRAY devices are pre-paired for automatic connection. Follow these steps for successful deployment:

4.1 Initial Configuration (Bench Setup)

It is recommended to perform an initial bench setup to verify functionality before outdoor installation.

  1. Place the two nRAY devices approximately 10 feet (3 meters) apart.
  2. Connect each device to its respective PoE injector and power supply.
  3. Connect the PoE injector to your network equipment using a Cat 6a Ethernet cable.
  4. Power on both devices. They should automatically establish a link.
  5. Verify network connectivity and throughput.

4.2 Physical Installation

The nRAY devices are designed for outdoor pole mounting using the included solidMOUNT precision mounts.

4.3 Alignment

Precise alignment between the two nRAY devices is crucial for optimal performance. The solidMOUNT features fine-tune adjustment screws for this purpose.

  1. Loosely adjust the mounts to roughly point the devices towards each other.
  2. Power on both devices.
  3. Using the fine-tune adjustment screws on the solidMOUNT, slowly adjust the horizontal and vertical angles of each device.
  4. Monitor the signal strength indicators (if available via software interface) or network throughput to achieve the strongest possible link.
  5. Once optimal alignment is achieved, tighten all adjustment screws to secure the devices in position.

5. Operating the Device

Once installed and aligned, the MikroTik Wireless Wire nRAY operates as a transparent Layer 2 bridge, effectively extending your Ethernet network wirelessly.

  • Automatic Connection: The devices are pre-configured to connect automatically upon power-up, establishing a secure AES encrypted wireless link.
  • 60 GHz Frequency: The use of the 60 GHz frequency band provides high throughput and is less susceptible to interference from crowded 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wireless spectrums, making it suitable for dense urban environments.
  • Performance: A powerful ARM64 dual-core CPU operating at 1 GHz ensures wire-speed throughput for most packet sizes, supporting demanding network applications.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Wireless Wire nRAY system.

  • Physical Inspection: Periodically inspect the devices and mounts for any signs of damage, loose connections, or corrosion.
  • Environmental Design: The nRAY's form factor is designed to minimize snow accumulation, reducing signal obstruction in snowy conditions. However, ensure that no foreign objects or excessive debris obstruct the antenna path.
  • Firmware Updates: It is crucial to keep the device firmware updated to the latest stable version. Firmware updates often include performance improvements, bug fixes, and enhanced stability. Refer to the MikroTik website for the latest firmware and update instructions.
  • Cleaning: If necessary, gently clean the exterior of the devices with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.

7. Troubleshooting

This section provides solutions to common issues you might encounter.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No link established / Poor signal strength
  • Misalignment of devices
  • Outdated firmware
  • Environmental obstructions (e.g., heavy rain, snow, foliage)
  • Incorrect frequency settings (advanced users)
  • Re-align devices carefully using fine-tune screws.
  • Update to the latest stable firmware from MikroTik.
  • Ensure clear line-of-sight. 60 GHz is sensitive to obstructions.
  • For advanced users, consider adjusting the 60 GHz frequency (e.g., to 64800 MHz) and TX sector settings if experiencing drops over longer distances or in adverse weather.
Device not powering on
  • Power supply or PoE injector failure
  • Faulty Ethernet cable
  • Device hardware issue
  • Verify power connections and test with a known good power supply/PoE injector.
  • Replace the Ethernet cable.
  • Contact MikroTik support if the issue persists.
Lower than expected data transfer rates
  • Suboptimal alignment
  • Interference
  • Outdated firmware
  • Refine device alignment.
  • Ensure no physical obstructions are in the path.
  • Update firmware.
