- Placement: Place the turntable on a firm, level surface, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and strong vibrations. Ensure there is enough space for the dust cover to open fully.
- Platter Installation: Gently place the aluminum platter onto the center spindle. Ensure it sits flush.
- Drive Belt: If not already installed, carefully stretch the drive belt around the inner rim of the platter and around the motor pulley.
- Felt Mat: Place the felt mat on top of the platter.
- Dust Cover: Attach the dust cover to the hinges at the rear of the turntable.
- Tonearm Setup: The Audio Technica AT VM95E cartridge is pre-mounted and the tonearm is factory-set for optimal tracking. Remove the tonearm lock before operation.
- Audio Connections:
- Connect the RCA audio cable from the turntable's output to an appropriate input on your amplifier or receiver.
- If your amplifier has a dedicated 'PHONO' input, connect the turntable directly to it. Ensure the turntable's internal phono preamplifier switch (located on the rear panel) is set to 'OFF' (or 'PHONO OUT').
- If your amplifier does not have a 'PHONO' input, connect the turntable to a 'LINE' or 'AUX' input. In this case, ensure the turntable's internal phono preamplifier switch is set to 'ON' (or 'LINE OUT').
- Connect the ground wire from the turntable to the ground terminal on your amplifier (if available) to minimize hum.
- Power Connection: Connect the 12V DC power adapter to the turntable's power input, then plug the adapter into a wall outlet.

5. Operating Instructions
The Thorens TD 102 A is a fully-automatic turntable, simplifying playback operation.
- Power On: Locate the power switch (usually on the rear or underside) and turn the unit on.
- Select Speed: Use the speed selector switch (typically 33 1/3 or 45 RPM) to match the speed of your record.
- Place Record: Carefully place your vinyl record on the felt mat on the platter. For 45 RPM singles, use the included adapter if necessary.
- Start Playback: Press the 'START' button. The tonearm will automatically lift, move to the lead-in groove of the record, and gently lower the stylus onto the record.
- Stop Playback: To stop playback at any time, press the 'STOP' button. The tonearm will automatically lift, return to its rest, and the platter will stop spinning.
- Automatic Shut-off: At the end of a record, the tonearm will automatically lift, return to its rest, and the platter will stop spinning, preventing unnecessary stylus wear.
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your turntable.
- Cleaning the Plinth and Dust Cover: Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to wipe the plinth and dust cover. For stubborn marks, a slightly damp cloth can be used, followed by a dry one. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Stylus Cleaning: Gently clean the stylus regularly using a dedicated stylus brush. Brush from back to front (away from the cantilever) to remove dust and debris.
- Stylus Replacement: The Audio Technica AT VM95E stylus has a lifespan that varies with usage. Replace the stylus when you notice a degradation in sound quality or after approximately 300-500 hours of playback. Replacement styli for the AT VM95E are readily available.
- Drive Belt Inspection: Periodically inspect the drive belt for signs of wear, stretching, or cracking. A worn belt can affect speed stability. Replace if necessary.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your turntable, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
- No Power:
- Ensure the power adapter is securely connected to both the turntable and a working wall outlet.
- Check if the power switch on the turntable is in the 'ON' position.
- No Sound or Low Volume:
- Verify that the RCA audio cables are correctly connected to your amplifier/receiver.
- Check the position of the phono preamplifier switch on the turntable. It should be 'ON' for 'LINE' inputs and 'OFF' for 'PHONO' inputs on your amplifier.
- Ensure your amplifier is set to the correct input source and its volume is turned up.
- Check the stylus for damage or excessive dirt.
- Distorted Sound:
- Clean the stylus.
- Ensure the record is clean and free of dust.
- Check for any damage to the stylus or cantilever.
- Incorrect Playback Speed:
- Verify that the speed selector switch (33 1/3 or 45 RPM) matches the record's speed.
- Inspect the drive belt for wear or slippage.
- Tonearm Not Moving or Lowering:
- Ensure the tonearm lock is disengaged.
- Check for any obstructions preventing tonearm movement.
