2. Setup Guide

2.1 Speaker Placement

Optimal speaker placement is crucial for achieving the best sound quality. The DALI Opticon 6 Mk2 speakers are designed to be flexible in their positioning:

  • Near Wall Placement: The speakers can operate effectively from as close as 20cm (approximately 8 inches) from a rear wall. This can be beneficial in smaller rooms or where space is limited.
  • Free Space Placement: For larger rooms or if you prefer a wider soundstage, the speakers can be placed up to 1 metre (approximately 3.3 feet) from the rear wall. Experiment with distances to find the ideal balance for your listening environment.
  • Stereo Imaging: Position the speakers equidistant from your primary listening position, forming an equilateral triangle for optimal stereo imaging.

2.2 Connecting Your Speakers

The DALI Opticon 6 Mk2 are passive speakers and require an external amplifier or AV receiver to function. Ensure your amplifier is turned off before making any connections.

  1. Identify Terminals: Locate the binding posts on the rear of each speaker. These are typically color-coded (red for positive +, black for negative -).
  2. Prepare Speaker Cables: Strip approximately 1-2 cm (0.4-0.8 inches) of insulation from the ends of your speaker cables. Ensure no stray wire strands are present.
  3. Connect to Speakers: Connect the positive (+) terminal of the speaker to the positive (+) terminal of the corresponding amplifier channel. Similarly, connect the negative (-) terminal of the speaker to the negative (-) terminal of the amplifier. Maintain consistent polarity for both speakers.
  4. Connect to Amplifier: Connect the other end of the speaker cables to the appropriate speaker output terminals on your amplifier or AV receiver.
  5. Bi-wiring/Bi-amping (Optional): The Opticon 6 Mk2 speakers may support bi-wiring or bi-amping. Refer to your amplifier's manual and the speaker's specific terminal configuration for instructions if you wish to utilize these advanced connection methods. Ensure any bridging straps are removed if bi-wiring/bi-amping.

Important: Incorrect wiring can damage your speakers or amplifier. Always ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -) for both speakers.

3. Operation

3.1 Basic Operation

Once properly connected to an amplifier or AV receiver, the DALI Opticon 6 Mk2 speakers will reproduce audio from your source components. These are passive speakers, meaning they do not have built-in amplification and rely entirely on the external amplifier for power.

  • Power On: Turn on your amplifier/receiver and select the appropriate input source.
  • Volume Control: Adjust the volume using your amplifier/receiver's controls. Start at a low volume and gradually increase it.
  • Audio Mode: The speakers are designed for stereo audio output, providing a rich and immersive soundstage for music and movie soundtracks.
  • Break-in Period: Like many high-fidelity speakers, the Opticon 6 Mk2 may benefit from a break-in period of several hours of normal use to allow the drivers to settle and perform optimally.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Cleaning

To maintain the appearance and performance of your DALI Opticon 6 Mk2 speakers, follow these cleaning guidelines:

  • Cabinets: Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to gently wipe the cabinet surfaces. For satin finishes, avoid abrasive cleaners.
  • Grilles: If your speakers have fabric grilles, use a soft brush or a lint roller to remove dust. Do not use water or cleaning solutions on fabric grilles.
  • Drivers: Avoid touching the speaker drivers (woofers, tweeters) directly. If dust accumulates, use a very soft brush or compressed air from a distance.
  • Avoid Liquids: Never spray cleaning liquids directly onto the speakers. If necessary, dampen a cloth slightly with water (no harsh chemicals) and wipe, then immediately dry with a clean cloth.

4.2 Care and Storage

  • Temperature and Humidity: Store and operate the speakers in a stable environment, avoiding extreme temperatures or high humidity, which can damage the cabinet and internal components.
  • Direct Sunlight: Avoid placing speakers in direct sunlight for extended periods, as this can cause fading or damage to the cabinet finish.
  • Ventilation: Ensure adequate airflow around the speakers, especially if placed in a confined space, to prevent heat buildup.
  • Transportation: When moving the speakers, always lift them carefully from the base. Avoid dragging them, which can damage the plinth or floor.

5. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your DALI Opticon 6 Mk2 speakers, consult the following common troubleshooting steps:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No sound from one or both speakers.
  • Amplifier/receiver not powered on or input not selected.
  • Loose or incorrect speaker cable connections.
  • Source component issue.
  • Amplifier protection mode activated.
  • Ensure amplifier is on and correct input is selected.
  • Check all speaker cable connections at both the speaker and amplifier ends for tightness and correct polarity.
  • Test with a different audio source.
  • Turn off amplifier, wait a few minutes, then restart. Check for short circuits in wiring.
Distorted or unclear sound.
  • Volume too high, causing clipping.
  • Loose connections or damaged cables.
  • Incorrect amplifier impedance matching.
  • Damaged speaker driver.
  • Reduce volume.
  • Check all connections and inspect cables for damage.
  • Ensure your amplifier's impedance rating is compatible with the speakers (typically 4-8 ohms).
  • Contact DALI support or your retailer if a driver appears damaged.
Unbalanced sound (one speaker louder/quieter).
  • Incorrect balance setting on amplifier.
  • Loose connection on one channel.
  • Speaker placement issues.
  • Check and adjust the balance control on your amplifier/receiver.
  • Verify connections for the affected speaker.
  • Ensure speakers are equidistant from listening position and not obstructed.

If the problem persists after trying these steps, please contact DALI customer support or your authorized retailer for further assistance.
