Setup
- Attaching the Reel to a Rod:
Place the reel foot into the reel seat of your fishing rod. Tighten the reel seat nut securely until the reel is firmly attached and does not wobble. Ensure the reel is aligned correctly with the rod guides.
- Spooling Fishing Line:
Attach your chosen fishing line to the spool using an appropriate knot (e.g., arbor knot). Begin winding the line onto the spool, ensuring even tension. The Cross Wrap line laying system will help distribute the line uniformly. Fill the spool to approximately 1-2mm from the edge to prevent line overflow and optimize casting performance.
- Adjusting the Free-Spool Function:
Locate the free-spool lever, typically at the rear of the reel. Engage the free-spool by flipping the lever. Adjust the free-spool tension knob, usually located at the rear of the reel, to control the resistance of the spool when the free-spool is engaged. This allows fish to take line without feeling immediate resistance.
- Adjusting the Main Drag (ATD Brake System):
The main drag knob is located on the front of the spool. Turn it clockwise to increase drag tension and counter-clockwise to decrease it. Set the drag to approximately one-third of your line's breaking strength. Test the drag by pulling line directly from the spool; it should release smoothly under steady pressure.
Operating Instructions
- Casting:
Open the bail arm. Hold the line against the rod with your index finger. Execute your cast. As the lure or bait travels, release the line from your finger. Close the bail arm manually or by turning the handle once the lure has landed.
- Using the Free-Spool Function:
When fishing with bait and waiting for a bite, engage the free-spool function. This allows a fish to take the bait and run without feeling the main drag, preventing the rod from being pulled into the water. The finely adjustable free-spool tension can be set to match conditions.
- Engaging/Disengaging Free-Spool:
To engage free-spool, flip the free-spool lever. To disengage free-spool and engage the main drag, simply turn the reel handle forward. The Infinite Anti Reverse Backstop will prevent any backward movement.
- Retrieving:
Turn the reel handle to retrieve your line. The Tough Digigear system ensures efficient power transfer, and the Air Rotor contributes to smooth rotation. The Twist Buster II Line Roller minimizes line twist during retrieval, especially important for prolonged use.
- Fighting a Fish:
When a fish bites and you engage the main drag, allow the ATD Brake System to work. Do not overtighten the drag during a fight. Use the rod's flexibility and the reel's drag to tire the fish. Pump the rod up and reel down to gain line.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and performance of your fishing reel.
- Cleaning: After each use, especially in saltwater environments, rinse the reel with fresh water. Do not submerge the reel. Wipe it dry with a soft cloth.
- Lubrication: Periodically apply a small amount of high-quality reel oil to moving parts such as the handle shaft, line roller, and bail arm pivots. Use reel grease for gears if disassembling, but general users should avoid full disassembly unless experienced.
- Storage: Store your reel in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Ensure the drag is loosened before storage to prevent compression of the drag washers.
- Line Inspection: Regularly inspect your fishing line for nicks, abrasions, or signs of wear. Replace line as needed to prevent break-offs.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Daiwa 20 GS BR LT 5000-C reel, consider the following:
- Line Twist: Ensure proper line spooling. Avoid overfilling the spool. The Twist Buster II line roller helps, but excessive spinning of lures can still cause twist.
- Drag Slipping or Sticking: Check if the drag knob is properly tightened. If the drag feels inconsistent, it may require cleaning or replacement of drag washers. Consult a professional for internal drag system maintenance.
- Free-Spool Not Engaging/Disengaging: Ensure the free-spool lever is fully actuated. If the issue persists, check for obstructions or internal mechanism problems.
- Grinding or Rough Operation: This often indicates a need for lubrication or potential damage to internal gears. Discontinue use and seek professional service.
