JacobsParts USB C QC 2.0 3.0 DC Voltage Trigger Decoy Module

Model: POWTRIG-D User Manual

Introduction

The JacobsParts USB C QC 2.0 3.0 DC Voltage Trigger Decoy Module (Model POWTRIG-D) is designed to negotiate specific voltage outputs from Quick Charge (QC) enabled USB power sources. This module allows users to power various electronic devices that require fixed or adjustable DC voltages, utilizing readily available QC chargers and power banks. It supports QC 2.0 (5V, 9V, 12V, 20V) and QC 3.0 (3.6V to 20V in 0.2V increments) protocols.

Product Overview

The module features multiple connectors for versatile use and two control buttons for voltage selection. It is important to note that this module functions with QC-enabled power supplies and is not compatible with Power Delivery (PD)-only power sources. Many power supplies that support PD also support QC power negotiation.

Setup

Before using the module, ensure your power supply supports the Quick Charge (QC) protocol. The module is designed to work with QC 2.0, QC 3.0, and is forward compatible with QC 4.0 power sources. It will not function with Power Delivery (PD)-only power supplies.

Connections:

  • Input/Output: USB Type-C Male connector (for connecting to the power source or as an output).
  • Input/Output: USB Type-C Female port (for connecting to the power source or as an output).
  • Output Only: USB Type-A Female port (for connecting to the device requiring power).

Connect the module to a QC-enabled USB charger or power bank using either the USB Type-C male connector or the USB Type-C female port. Then, connect your target electronic device to one of the output ports (USB Type-C female or USB Type-A female).

Operating Instructions

The module allows you to trigger specific voltages from a QC-compatible power supply. The selected voltage setting is retained even after power loss.

QC 2.0 Voltage Selection:

For QC 2.0 modes, the desired voltage is set by pressing and holding specific buttons while connecting the module to the power supply.

  • 9V Output: Press and hold the S- button while connecting the module to the power supply.
  • 12V Output: Press and hold the S+ button while connecting the module to the power supply.
  • 20V Output: Press and hold both the S- and S+ buttons simultaneously while connecting the module to the power supply.
  • Note: If no buttons are pressed during connection, the module will default to 5V output.

QC 3.0 Adjustable Voltage:

QC 3.0 allows for fine-grained voltage adjustment between 3.6V and 20V in 0.2V increments.

  1. Unlock QC 3.0 Mode: Connect the module to the power supply. Press and hold the S+ button, then immediately press and hold the S- button. Release S- and then S+ in turn after approximately 1 second. The module will reset to 5V output and is now unlocked for QC 3.0 adjustment.
  2. Adjust Voltage (0.2V increments):
    • Short press S+ to increase voltage by 0.2V.
    • Short press S- to decrease voltage by 0.2V.
  3. Adjust Voltage (1.0V increments): Press and hold S-, then short press S+ to increase voltage by 1.0V.

The specific voltage options and current limit are determined by the capabilities of the connected power supply. The module's function is to perform the QC protocol negotiation and pass the negotiated output voltage and current.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and proper functioning of your JacobsParts Voltage Trigger Module, follow these simple maintenance guidelines:

  • Keep Dry: Avoid exposing the module to moisture or liquids, as this can damage the electronic components.
  • Handle with Care: The module is an exposed circuit board. Avoid bending, dropping, or applying excessive force to prevent physical damage to the components or connectors.
  • Cleanliness: Keep the module free from dust and debris. If cleaning is necessary, use a soft, dry brush or compressed air. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
  • Storage: Store the module in a cool, dry place when not in use.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues while using the module, consider the following troubleshooting steps:

  • No Voltage Output (or only 5V):
    • Ensure your power supply is QC-enabled. The module will not work with Power Delivery (PD)-only chargers.
    • Verify that the power supply is providing sufficient power.
    • Check if the red indicator light on the module is illuminated. If the red light is off, the module may be communicating at a basic 5V mode or not communicating correctly.
  • Incorrect Voltage Output:
    • Re-attempt the voltage selection procedure (QC 2.0 or QC 3.0) carefully, ensuring buttons are pressed correctly during connection or adjustment.
    • Confirm that your power supply supports the desired voltage level. The module can only trigger voltages that the power supply is capable of providing.
    • Use a USB voltage meter to verify the actual output voltage.
  • Intermittent Connection:
    • Ensure all USB connections are secure and free from debris.
    • Inspect the module's connectors for any visible damage.
  • Module Not Responding:
    • Disconnect and reconnect the module from the power supply.
    • Try a different QC-enabled power supply to rule out issues with the original source.
