5. Maintenance
Regular maintenance is crucial for the optimal performance and longevity of your filter. It is recommended to clean the filter every month or as needed.
5.1 Disassembly for Cleaning
- Unplug the filter from the power outlet.
- Carefully remove the filter from the aquarium.
- Separate the water pump unit from the filter box.
- Remove the bottom cover and extract the biochemical cotton sponge.
5.2 Cleaning the Filter Components
- Biochemical Cotton Sponge: Gently squeeze the filter sponge in a bucket of old aquarium water (not tap water) to remove accumulated debris and preserve beneficial bacteria. Replace the sponge if it is heavily degraded.
- Impeller: Inspect the impeller inside the pump unit for any debris or algae that might restrict its movement. Clean it thoroughly with a small brush if necessary.
- Filter Box and Outlets: Rinse the filter box, spray bar, and aeration outlet components with clean water to remove any residue.
5.3 Reassembly
After cleaning, reassemble the filter by following the disassembly steps in reverse order. Ensure all parts are securely fitted before placing the filter back into the aquarium and plugging it in.
6. Troubleshooting
6.1 Reduced Water Flow or No Flow
- Check for Clogs: The most common cause is a clogged filter sponge or impeller. Disassemble and clean the filter components as described in the Maintenance section.
- Impeller Obstruction: Ensure the impeller is free of debris and rotates smoothly.
- Water Level: Verify that the filter is fully submerged in water.
- Power Supply: Confirm the filter is properly plugged into a working power outlet.
6.2 Excessive Noise
- Impeller Issues: A noisy filter often indicates an issue with the impeller. Check for debris, damage, or improper seating.
- Vibration: Ensure the filter's suction cups are firmly attached to the aquarium glass and that the filter is not vibrating against the tank walls or other decorations.
- Air in Pump: If recently installed or after a water change, air may be trapped in the pump. Gently tilt the filter to release any trapped air bubbles.
6.3 Aeration Not Working
- Air Tube Kinked/Blocked: Check the air tube for kinks or blockages. Ensure the aeration regulation valve is open.
- Air Stone Clogged: If an air stone is used, it may be clogged and require cleaning or replacement.
