Setup
1. Attaching the Shock Mount
The shock mount is designed to isolate the microphone from vibrations and handling noise. Attach the VM20 microphone to the shock mount by gently sliding it into the clips. Ensure it is securely seated. The shock mount can then be mounted onto a camera's hot shoe or a tripod via its 1/4-inch screw thread.
2. Connecting to Your Device
The VM20 microphone is compatible with a wide range of devices using the appropriate 3.5mm cable.
- For Cameras (DSLR, Mirrorless, Video Cameras): Use the provided 3.5mm TRS-TRS audio cable. Connect one end to the microphone's 3.5mm audio output and the other end to your camera's microphone input jack.
- For Smartphones/Tablets: Use the provided 3.5mm TRS-TRRS audio cable. Connect the TRS end to the microphone's 3.5mm audio output and the TRRS end to your smartphone's or tablet's 3.5mm headphone/microphone jack.
Important: The USB-C port on the microphone is exclusively for charging and cannot be used for audio output.

3. Attaching Wind Protection
For outdoor recording or in windy conditions, attach the provided wind muff or windscreen to reduce wind noise and plosives.
- Windscreen: Slide the foam windscreen over the microphone head for basic wind protection.
- Wind Muff (Dead Cat): For more effective wind noise reduction, especially in strong winds, slide the furry wind muff over the windscreen.

4. Charging the Microphone
The VM20 has a built-in rechargeable lithium battery. To charge, connect the provided USB-C charging cable to the microphone's USB-C port and the other end to a USB power source (e.g., power adapter, computer, power bank).
- The OLED display will show the charging status.
- A full charge provides up to 60 hours of operation.

Operating Instructions
1. Power On/Off
Press and hold the Power Button for approximately 2 seconds to turn the microphone on or off. The OLED display will illuminate upon power-on.
2. Gain Adjustment
The VM20 features a stepless gain adjustment dial. Rotate the dial to increase or decrease the microphone's input sensitivity. Adjust the gain to achieve optimal audio levels without distortion.

3. Low-Cut Filter Modes
The microphone offers two low-cut filter modes (75Hz and 150Hz) to reduce low-frequency noise such as rumble, air conditioning hum, or traffic sounds. Press the Low-Cut Filter Button to cycle through the modes:
- No Low-Cut: Default setting.
- 75Hz Low-Cut: Filters out frequencies below 75Hz.
- 150Hz Low-Cut: Filters out frequencies below 150Hz for stronger noise reduction.

4. OLED Display Monitoring
The integrated OLED display provides real-time information:
- Battery Level: Shows the remaining battery charge.
- Audio Level: Provides a visual indication of the incoming audio signal strength.
- Low-Cut Mode: Indicates the currently selected low-cut filter setting.
5. Super-Cardioid Polar Pattern
The VM20 utilizes a super-cardioid polar pattern, which is highly directional. This design primarily captures sound from directly in front of the microphone while significantly reducing sounds from the sides and rear. This characteristic is ideal for isolating the subject's voice and minimizing ambient noise.

Maintenance
1. Cleaning
- Wipe the microphone body with a soft, dry cloth.
- Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents, as they may damage the microphone's finish or internal components.
- Clean the wind muff and windscreen as needed according to their material care instructions.
2. Storage
- Store the microphone in its provided storage case when not in use to protect it from dust, moisture, and physical damage.
- Avoid storing in extreme temperatures or high humidity.
3. Battery Care
- For optimal battery life, avoid fully discharging the battery frequently.
- If storing for an extended period, charge the battery to approximately 50-70% before storage and recharge every few months.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Comica VM20 microphone, please refer to the following common problems and solutions:
- No Sound Output:
- Ensure the microphone is powered on.
- Check that the audio cable is securely connected to both the microphone and your recording device.
- Verify that the correct cable (TRS-TRS for cameras, TRS-TRRS for smartphones) is being used.
- Increase the microphone's gain level using the adjustment dial.
- Check your recording device's audio input settings and volume levels.
- Ensure the microphone's battery is charged.
- Poor Sound Quality (Noise/Distortion):
- Adjust the gain level; if the sound is distorted, the gain might be too high. If it's too quiet, it might be too low.
- Engage the 75Hz or 150Hz low-cut filter to reduce low-frequency rumble.
- Use the wind muff or windscreen in windy environments to reduce wind noise.
- Ensure the microphone is positioned correctly, pointing directly at the sound source.
- Check for electromagnetic interference from other electronic devices; try moving the microphone away from them.
- Battery Not Charging:
- Ensure the USB-C charging cable is properly connected to both the microphone and the power source.
- Try a different USB-C cable or power adapter.
- Verify that the power source is active and providing power.
- Compatibility Issues:
- Ensure your device supports external microphones via its 3.5mm input.
- For Lightning-only devices, a genuine Apple Lightning to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter (not included) is required.
If the problem persists after trying these steps, please contact Comica customer support for further assistance.
