4. Setup

4.1 Charging the Keyboard

Before initial use, fully charge the keyboard. Connect the provided USB Type-C cable to the keyboard's USB-C port and the other end to a power source (e.g., computer USB port, USB wall adapter).

4.2 Connecting the Keyboard

The K12 supports both Bluetooth wireless and USB wired connections.

4.2.1 Bluetooth Connection

  1. Ensure the keyboard's mode switch (located on the side) is set to 'BT' (Bluetooth).
  2. Press and hold the 'Fn1' + '1' (or 'Fn1' + '2' or 'Fn1' + '3') keys for 4 seconds to enter pairing mode. The backlight will flash rapidly.
  3. On your device (computer, smartphone, tablet), enable Bluetooth and search for 'Keychron K12'.
  4. Select 'Keychron K12' to pair. The backlight will stop flashing upon successful connection.
  5. To switch between paired devices, press 'Fn1' + '1', 'Fn1' + '2', or 'Fn1' + '3'.

4.2.2 Wired Connection

  1. Ensure the keyboard's mode switch is set to 'Cable'.
  2. Connect the USB Type-C cable from the keyboard to your computer's USB port.
  3. The keyboard will be recognized automatically by your operating system.

4.3 Operating System Switch

The K12 has a switch to select between Mac and Windows operating system layouts. Locate the 'Mac/Windows' switch on the side of the keyboard and set it to your desired operating system. This ensures correct key mapping for multimedia and function keys.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Backlight Control

The K12 features RGB backlighting with 18 different effects. Use the following key combinations to control the backlight:

  • Fn1 + Light Key (bulb icon): Cycle through backlight effects.
  • Fn1 + Arrow Up/Down: Adjust backlight brightness.
  • Fn1 + Arrow Left/Right: Adjust backlight speed (for dynamic effects).

5.2 Hot-Swapping Switches

The K12's hot-swappable PCB allows you to change mechanical switches without soldering. This feature enables customization of your typing experience.

  1. Power off the keyboard or disconnect it from your device.
  2. Use the provided keycap puller to carefully remove the desired keycap.
  3. Use the provided switch puller to gently grasp the switch from the top and bottom, then pull it straight up to remove it.
  4. Align the pins of the new switch with the holes on the PCB. Ensure the pins are straight.
  5. Gently press the new switch into place until it clicks. Do not force it.
  6. Replace the keycap.

5.3 Key Functions

The K12's compact layout utilizes function (Fn) keys to access various commands. Refer to the keyboard's keycap legends for specific combinations. The included extra keycaps can be used to match your operating system's layout.

5.4 Adjustable Feet

The keyboard features two-level adjustable feet to customize the typing angle for ergonomic comfort. Flip out the feet to achieve your preferred angle.
