Whadda Educational Soldering Kit

The Gent Chameleon (Model: WSAK205)

Instruction Manual

Introduction

Welcome to the world of electronics with the Whadda Educational Soldering Kit, The Gent Chameleon. This kit provides an engaging way to learn basic soldering techniques and understand simple electronic circuits. Upon completion, you will have a mesmerizing chameleon that lights up in the dark. This unique gadget features a two-tone PCB that transitions from blue to green. The 'eye' of the Gent is a phototransistor that registers light. If it doesn't 'see' any light, the LEDs will gracefully show their colors.

Safety Information

WARNING: This kit involves soldering, which uses heat and can produce fumes. Adult supervision is recommended for younger users.

  • Always work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling solder fumes.
  • Use appropriate safety gear, including safety glasses, to protect your eyes.
  • Be cautious when handling a hot soldering iron. Avoid touching the tip directly.
  • Ensure the soldering iron is placed in a safe holder when not in use.
  • Disconnect the soldering iron from power when finished or leaving the workspace.
  • Wash hands thoroughly after handling solder, especially lead-based solder.
  • Keep small components away from young children to prevent choking hazards.

Package Contents

The Whadda Gent Chameleon kit includes all necessary electronic components for assembly. Please note that the battery is excluded and must be purchased separately.

  • Printed Circuit Board (PCB) in chameleon shape
  • LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes)
  • Resistors
  • Phototransistor (light sensor)
  • Integrated Circuit (IC)
  • Battery holder (for CR2032 coin cell battery, battery not included)
  • Switch
  • Other small electronic components

Setup Instructions

Before you begin, ensure you have a clean, well-lit workspace and the following tools (not included):

  • Soldering iron
  • Solder wire
  • Wire cutters/flush cutters
  • Small pliers or tweezers
  • Safety glasses
  • CR2032 coin cell battery

Assembly Steps:

  1. Identify Components: Carefully unpack all components and identify them using the provided circuit diagram (if available) or by matching them to the PCB markings.
  2. Prepare the PCB: Place the chameleon-shaped PCB on a heat-resistant surface.
  3. Solder Resistors: Start by soldering the smallest components first. Insert the resistors into their designated spots on the PCB. Bend their leads slightly to hold them in place, then solder them from the bottom side of the PCB. Trim excess leads.
  4. Solder Phototransistor and IC: Carefully insert the phototransistor (the 'eye') and the integrated circuit (IC) into their correct positions, paying attention to polarity (notches or dots usually indicate orientation). Solder and trim leads.
  5. Solder LEDs: Insert the LEDs, ensuring correct polarity (the longer lead is typically positive, and the flat side of the LED casing indicates the cathode/negative). Solder and trim leads.
  6. Solder Battery Holder and Switch: Attach the battery holder and the switch to their respective pads on the PCB. Ensure secure connections for power.
  7. Inspect Solder Joints: Visually inspect all solder joints for good connections (shiny, cone-shaped joints) and ensure there are no solder bridges (accidental connections between pads).

Operating Instructions

Once assembly is complete and all solder joints are verified:

  1. Insert Battery: Carefully insert a CR2032 coin cell battery into the battery holder, ensuring correct polarity (+ side up).
  2. Activate: Flip the switch to the 'ON' position.
  3. Observe: The chameleon's LEDs will respond to ambient light conditions. In a well-lit environment, the LEDs should remain off or dim. When placed in a dark environment, the phototransistor will detect the absence of light, and the LEDs will illuminate, showcasing their colors.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and proper functioning of your Whadda Gent Chameleon:

  • Keep the circuit board clean and free from dust and debris. Use a soft, dry brush if necessary.
  • Avoid exposing the kit to moisture or extreme temperatures.
  • If the LEDs stop working, first check the battery and replace it if needed.
  • Store the chameleon in a safe place when not in use to prevent damage to components.

Troubleshooting

  • LEDs do not light up:
    • Check if the battery is inserted correctly and is not depleted.
    • Ensure the power switch is in the 'ON' position.
    • Inspect all solder joints for cold joints (dull, lumpy appearance) or solder bridges. Re-solder if necessary.
    • Verify LED polarity during assembly.
    • Ensure the phototransistor is correctly oriented and soldered.
  • LEDs are always on/off regardless of light:
    • Check the phototransistor's orientation and solder connections.
    • Ensure no components are short-circuited on the PCB.
  • Kit does not power on:
    • Confirm the battery is functional and correctly installed.
    • Check the battery holder connections and the power switch for proper soldering.
