1. Important Safety Instructions

Please read all instructions carefully before using the sewing machine. Keep this manual for future reference.

• Always unplug the machine from the electrical outlet immediately after using and before cleaning or servicing.
• Do not operate the machine with a damaged cord or plug. If the machine is not working properly, has been dropped, damaged, or dropped into water, return it to the nearest authorized service dealer for examination, repair, electrical or mechanical adjustment.
• Never operate the machine with any air openings blocked. Keep ventilation openings of the sewing machine and foot controller free from the accumulation of lint, dust, and loose cloth.
• Keep fingers away from all moving parts. Special care is required around the sewing machine needle.
• Always use the proper needle plate. The wrong plate can cause the needle to break.
• Do not pull or push fabric while stitching. This may deflect the needle, causing it to break.
• Turn the sewing machine off when making any adjustments in the needle area, such as threading the needle, changing the needle, threading the bobbin, or changing the presser foot.
• Never drop or insert any object into any opening.
• Do not use outdoors.
• Do not operate where aerosol (spray) products are being used or where oxygen is being administered.

2. Product Components

Familiarize yourself with the various parts of your MARIG FHSM-618 sewing machine.

3. Getting Started

3.1 Unpacking

Carefully remove the sewing machine from its packaging. Retain all packaging materials for storage or future transport. Ensure all accessories listed in the package contents are present.

3.2 Power Supply Connection

1. Ensure the machine's power switch is in the 'OFF' position.
2. Connect the AC adapter to the AC/DC Input jack on the back of the machine.
3. Plug the AC adapter into a standard electrical outlet (100V-240V, 50/60Hz).

3.3 Foot Pedal Connection

If you prefer to use the foot pedal for speed control, insert the foot pedal plug into the Foot Pedal Input jack on the back of the machine.

4. Basic Operations

4.1 Bobbin Winding

1. Place an empty bobbin onto the bobbin winder spindle.
2. Place a spool of thread onto the spool pin.
3. Guide the thread through the bobbin winder tension disk.
4. Wind the thread clockwise around the bobbin a few times.
5. Push the bobbin winder spindle to the right.
6. Turn on the machine. Press the foot pedal or use the hand switch to start winding. The machine will automatically stop when the bobbin is full.
7. Cut the thread and push the bobbin winder spindle back to the left. Remove the wound bobbin.

4.2 Threading the Upper Thread

1. Raise the needle to its highest position by turning the hand wheel towards you.
2. Place a spool of thread on the spool pin.
3. Guide the thread through the first thread guide.
4. Bring the thread down and around the upper thread tension dial.
5. Guide the thread up and through the take-up lever from right to left.
6. Bring the thread down through the remaining thread guides.
7. Thread the needle from front to back. Pull about 15 cm (6 inches) of thread through the needle eye.

4.3 Inserting the Bobbin (Lower Thread)

1. Open the bobbin cover plate located below the needle plate.
2. Insert the wound bobbin into the bobbin case, ensuring the thread unwinds in the correct direction (usually counter-clockwise).
3. Pull the bobbin thread through the small slot in the bobbin case.
4. Hold the upper thread lightly with your left hand. Turn the hand wheel towards you to lower the needle, then raise it again. The needle will catch the bobbin thread and pull it up through the needle plate.
5. Pull both upper and lower threads to the back under the presser foot.
6. Close the bobbin cover plate.

4.4 Needle Installation and Replacement

1. Turn off the machine and unplug it.
2. Loosen the needle clamp screw by turning it counter-clockwise.
3. Remove the old needle.
4. Insert a new needle with the flat side facing the back of the machine. Push it up as far as it will go.
5. Tighten the needle clamp screw securely.

4.5 Stitch Selection

Turn the Pattern Selection Dial to choose one of the 20 built-in stitch patterns. Ensure the needle is in its highest position before changing the stitch pattern.

4.6 Adjusting Thread Tension

The Upper Thread Tension Dial controls the tightness of the upper thread. Adjust as needed to achieve balanced stitches. A balanced stitch will have both upper and lower threads meeting evenly between the fabric layers.

• If the upper thread lies flat on the fabric and the bobbin thread shows on top, increase the upper thread tension (turn to a higher number).
• If the bobbin thread lies flat on the fabric and the upper thread shows on the bottom, decrease the upper thread tension (turn to a lower number).

4.7 Starting and Stopping Sewing

The machine offers two ways to start and stop sewing:

• Hand Switch: Slide the Power Off & Speed Switch to 'L' (Low speed) or 'H' (High speed) to start sewing. Slide it to 'OFF' to stop.
• Foot Pedal: With the Power Off & Speed Switch in the 'OFF' position, press the foot pedal to start sewing. The harder you press, the faster the machine sews. Release the pedal to stop.

4.8 Reverse Sewing

To reinforce stitches, press and hold the Reverse Sewing lever. The machine will sew backward. Release the lever to resume forward sewing.

4.9 Sewing Sleeves (Free Arm)

To sew cylindrical items like sleeves or pant hems, slide off the accessory drawer. This exposes the free arm, allowing fabric to be easily maneuvered around it.

4.10 Buttonhole Sewing

The FHSM-618 includes a buttonhole presser foot. Refer to the stitch pattern diagram (Figure 4.2) for the specific buttonhole stitch. Attach the buttonhole presser foot and follow the instructions for your chosen buttonhole pattern.

4.11 Using the Thread Cutter

After completing a seam, pull the fabric away from the needle and guide the threads into the thread cutter located on the side of the machine to trim them.

4.12 Built-in Sewing Light

The machine features a built-in LED light to illuminate your sewing area. This light turns on automatically when the machine is powered on.

5. Maintenance and Care

5.1 Cleaning the Machine

Regular cleaning helps maintain optimal performance.

• Always unplug the machine before cleaning.
• Use a soft brush to remove lint and dust from the bobbin area and feed dogs.
• Wipe the exterior of the machine with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners or harsh chemicals.

5.2 Changing the Needle

Replace the needle regularly, especially after sewing thick fabrics or if it becomes bent or dull. A bent or dull needle can cause skipped stitches or thread breakage. Refer to section 4.4 for detailed instructions.
