5. Setup and Installation

5.1 Pre-Installation Checklist

  • Verify that your switch box has a neutral wire (usually white).
  • Ensure the power to the switch location is OFF at the circuit breaker.
  • Confirm you have basic wiring tools (screwdriver, wire strippers).

5.2 Wiring Instructions

The UltraPro Smart Switch features SimpleWire technology for simplified wiring. The auto-detecting line/load terminals will identify the correct wires. Dual ground ports are offset to prevent interference with mounting screws.

  1. Turn OFF Power: At the circuit breaker, turn off the power to the switch box you are working on.
  2. Remove Old Switch: Carefully remove the existing switch from the wall box. Disconnect the wires, noting their original connections.
  3. Connect Wires: Connect the wires from your wall box to the UltraPro Smart Switch terminals as follows:
    • Ground Wire: Connect the bare copper or green wire from the wall box to the GROUND terminal.
    • Neutral Wire: Connect the white neutral wire from the wall box to the NEUTRAL terminal.
    • Line/Load Wires: Connect the black line and load wires to the LINE/LOAD terminals. The SimpleWire technology will automatically detect which is which.
    • Traveler Wire (for 3-way setups): If installing in a 3-way configuration, connect the traveler wire to the TRAVELER terminal. (Requires an UltraPro add-on switch #39350, sold separately).
  4. Secure Switch: Carefully fold the wires and push the switch into the wall box. Secure it with the provided screws.
  5. Install Wallplate: Attach the wallplate (sold separately).
  6. Restore Power: Turn ON the power at the circuit breaker. The blue LED on the switch should illuminate.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Manual Control

  • Turn ON: Press the top of the paddle switch.
  • Turn OFF: Press the bottom of the paddle switch.

6.2 Z-Wave Integration (Pairing)

To integrate your smart switch into your Z-Wave network, you will need a compatible Z-Wave hub. The switch supports SmartStart for simplified pairing.

  1. Enable Pairing Mode: Put your Z-Wave hub into inclusion or pairing mode. Refer to your hub's instruction manual for specific steps.
  2. SmartStart (Recommended): If your hub supports SmartStart, scan the QR code located on the switch or its packaging. The switch will automatically pair with your hub. The Device Specific Key (DSK) is also printed near the QR code for manual entry if needed.
  3. Manual Inclusion: If SmartStart is not available, initiate manual inclusion on your Z-Wave hub. Then, quickly press the top or bottom paddle of the UltraPro switch once. The LED indicator will flash to confirm inclusion.
  4. Confirmation: Your Z-Wave hub should confirm successful pairing. You can now control the switch through your hub's interface.

6.3 Voice Control

Once successfully paired with a Z-Wave hub that supports Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant integration, you can use voice commands to control your lights.

  1. Connect Hub to Voice Assistant: Follow your Z-Wave hub's instructions to link it with your Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant account.
  2. Discover Devices: Use the voice assistant app to discover new devices. Your UltraPro Smart Switch should appear.
  3. Voice Commands: You can now use commands such as:
    • "Alexa, turn on the living room light."
    • "Hey Google, turn off the kitchen light."

Through your Z-Wave hub's application, you can control your lights from anywhere and create custom scenes.

  • Control from Anywhere: Use your smartphone, tablet, or PC to turn lights on or off, or adjust schedules, even when you're away from home.
  • Custom Scenes: Program groups of hardwired fixtures for specific events, times, or moods. For example, a "Movie Night" scene could dim the lights, or a "Good Morning" scene could gradually brighten them.

7. Maintenance

8. Troubleshooting

  • Light does not turn ON/OFF:
    • Ensure power is restored at the circuit breaker.
    • Check wiring connections to ensure they are secure and correct (Line, Load, Neutral, Ground).
    • Verify the bulb is working and properly installed.
  • Switch does not pair with Z-Wave hub:
    • Ensure your Z-Wave hub is in inclusion/pairing mode.
    • Try moving the hub closer to the switch during pairing.
    • Reset the switch: With the switch LED glowing, quickly press the top paddle three times, then the bottom paddle three times. The LED will flash to confirm reset. Then attempt pairing again.
    • If using SmartStart, ensure the QR code is scanned correctly.
  • Remote control not working:
    • Confirm the switch is successfully paired with your Z-Wave hub.
    • Check your Z-Wave network's health and signal strength. The switch acts as a repeater, but obstacles can still affect communication.
    • Ensure your Z-Wave hub has internet connectivity if controlling remotely.
