IWISS iCrimp IWS-1442L Crimping Pliers Instruction Manual

Model: IWS-1442L | Brand: IWISS

Introduction

The IWISS iCrimp IWS-1442L crimping pliers are designed for precise and reliable crimping of open barrel terminals. This tool features a high-precision ratchet mechanism to ensure complete crimps and secure connections. Its ergonomic design and lightweight construction contribute to reduced user fatigue during operation. The pliers are equipped with 15 different die sizes, making them suitable for a broad range of terminal applications, accommodating wire sizes from 30 AWG to 14 AWG (0.05 mm² to 2 mm²).

Safety Information

  • Always wear appropriate eye protection when using crimping tools.
  • Ensure the tool is clean and free from debris before each use.
  • Do not use the tool for purposes other than its intended use (crimping open barrel terminals).
  • Keep hands and fingers clear of the crimping jaws during operation.
  • Store the tool in a dry, safe place, out of reach of children.

Product Components

The IWISS iCrimp IWS-1442L crimping pliers consist of the following main components:

  • Crimping Jaws: Precision-machined jaws with multiple die sizes for conductor and insulation crimping.
  • Ratchet Mechanism: Ensures a full crimp cycle for consistent results.
  • Emergency Release Lever: Allows for opening the jaws mid-cycle if necessary.
  • Ergonomic Handles: Two-component handles made of Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE) for comfortable and secure grip.

Setup

  1. Inspect the Tool: Before first use, inspect the crimping pliers for any signs of damage or manufacturing defects.
  2. Identify Correct Die Size: Refer to the markings on the crimping jaws to select the appropriate die size for your specific terminal and wire gauge. The pliers feature 15 different die sizes for various applications.
  3. Prepare Wire: Strip the wire insulation to the correct length, exposing the conductor. Ensure the stripped length matches the terminal's conductor barrel.

Operating Instructions

The IWISS IWS-1442L crimping pliers are designed for two-stage crimping: first the conductor, then the insulation.

  1. Insert Terminal: Open the crimping pliers and place the open barrel terminal into the appropriate die cavity. The ratchet mechanism allows you to secure the terminal in the cavity before inserting the wire.
  2. Insert Wire (Conductor): Carefully insert the stripped conductor of the wire into the conductor barrel of the terminal. Ensure all wire strands are within the barrel.
  3. Crimp Conductor: Squeeze the handles of the pliers firmly until the ratchet mechanism completes its cycle and releases. This will crimp the conductor barrel around the wire.
  4. Reposition for Insulation: After the conductor crimp, reposition the terminal in the appropriate insulation crimp die cavity.
  5. Crimp Insulation: Insert the insulated part of the wire into the insulation barrel of the terminal. Squeeze the handles again until the ratchet mechanism completes its cycle. This will crimp the insulation barrel around the wire's insulation.
  6. Inspect Crimp: After crimping, visually inspect the terminal to ensure a secure and proper crimp on both the conductor and insulation. The crimp should be firm and hold the wire securely without damaging the insulation or conductor strands.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: After each use, wipe the crimping jaws and tool body with a clean, dry cloth to remove any dust, debris, or wire fragments.
  • Lubrication: Periodically apply a light machine oil to the pivot points and moving parts to ensure smooth operation and prevent rust.
  • Storage: Store the pliers in a dry environment to prevent corrosion. Keep the jaws closed to protect the crimping surfaces.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Poor crimp quality (loose wire, damaged terminal)Incorrect die size selected; improper wire stripping; terminal not fully seated.Verify the correct die size for the terminal and wire. Ensure wire is stripped to the correct length. Confirm the terminal is fully seated in the die before crimping.
Pliers jammed during crimpingOver-crimping; foreign object in jaws; ratchet mechanism stuck.Use the emergency release lever to open the jaws. Inspect for obstructions. Do not force the tool.
Handles difficult to squeezeLack of lubrication; rust; excessive force required for the chosen terminal.Apply light machine oil to pivot points. Clean any rust. Ensure the tool is rated for the terminal size being used.
