4. Setup
4.1. Battery Installation
The AP-770K requires a 9V battery for operation. To install or replace the battery:
- Ensure the multimeter is powered off and test leads are disconnected.
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the unit.
- Use a screwdriver to remove the screw securing the cover.
- Carefully remove the cover and insert a new 9V battery, observing correct polarity.
- Replace the cover and secure it with the screw.
4.2. Connecting Test Leads
Always connect the black test lead to the 'COM' (common) jack. Connect the red test lead to the appropriate input jack based on the measurement function:
- For Voltage, Resistance, Frequency, Capacitance, Diode, Continuity, Temperature, Dwell Angle, Pulse Width, Duty Cycle, and mA current measurements, connect the red lead to the VΩHzmA jack.
- For 20A current measurements, connect the red lead to the 20A jack.
5. Operating Instructions
To begin, turn the rotary selector switch to the desired measurement function. The meter will automatically select the appropriate range (auto-ranging) for most functions.
5.1. General Functions
- Power On/Off: Rotate the selector switch from 'OFF' to any function to power on. Rotate back to 'OFF' to power off. The meter features an Auto Shut Down function after 15 minutes of inactivity to conserve battery.
- Auto Backlight: The LCD display has an auto backlight sensor, which activates the backlight in dim conditions.
- Data Hold (HOLD): Press the 'HOLD' button to freeze the current reading on the display. Press again to release.
- MAX/MIN: Press the 'MAX/MIN' button to record the maximum and minimum values during a measurement. Press again to cycle between MAX, MIN, and current reading.
- PEAK Hold: Press the 'PEAK' button to capture the peak AC voltage or current.
- SELECT: Used to switch between different measurement types within a single rotary switch position (e.g., AC/DC voltage, Diode/Continuity, ℃/℉).
5.2. Specific Measurement Modes
Ensure test leads are correctly connected as described in Section 4.2.
- DC/AC Voltage (V): Rotate the switch to 'V='. Use 'SELECT' to toggle between DC and AC voltage. Connect leads in parallel to the circuit.
- DC/AC Current (A, mA): Rotate the switch to 'mA~' or '20A~'. Use 'SELECT' to toggle between DC and AC current. Connect leads in series with the circuit. For currents above 20A, an external current clamp (not included) is required.
- Resistance (Ω): Rotate the switch to 'Ω'. Connect leads in parallel to the component. Ensure the circuit is de-energized before measuring resistance.
- Continuity Test: Rotate the switch to 'Ω' and use 'SELECT' to choose continuity. A buzzer will sound if resistance is below a certain threshold.
- Diode Test: Rotate the switch to 'Ω' and use 'SELECT' to choose diode test. Displays the forward voltage drop of the diode.
- Capacitance (mF): Rotate the switch to 'mF'. Connect leads to the capacitor. Ensure capacitors are discharged before testing.
- Frequency (Hz) / Duty Cycle (%): Rotate the switch to 'Hz%'. Use 'SELECT' to toggle between frequency and duty cycle.
- Temperature (℃/℉): Rotate the switch to '℃/℉'. Connect the included temperature probe to the VΩHzmA and COM jacks. Use 'SELECT' to switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit.
- Dwell Angle: Rotate the switch to 'DWELL'. This function measures the dwell angle for 4, 6, or 8-cylinder engines.
- Tachometer (RPM): Rotate the switch to 'RPM'. This function measures engine revolutions per minute.
- Pulse Width (ms-PULSE): Rotate the switch to 'ms-PULSE'. Measures the pulse width in milliseconds.
- Non-Contact Voltage (NCV): Rotate the switch to 'NCV'. Bring the top of the meter near an AC voltage source. The NCV Red/Green LEDs will illuminate, and a buzzer will sound, indicating the presence of AC voltage without direct contact.

6. Maintenance
6.1. Cleaning
Wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Keep the input terminals free of dirt and moisture.
6.2. Battery Replacement
Refer to Section 4.1 for instructions on replacing the 9V battery when the low battery indicator appears on the display.
6.3. Fuse Replacement
If the current measurement functions cease to work, the fuse may need replacement. To replace the fuse:
- Ensure the multimeter is powered off and test leads are disconnected.
- Remove the battery compartment cover as described in Section 4.1.
- Locate the fuse(s) inside the compartment. The AP-770K typically uses two fuses: a 600mA/250V fast-acting fuse for mA measurements and a 20A/250V fast-acting fuse for 20A measurements.
- Carefully remove the blown fuse and replace it with a fuse of the exact same type and rating.
- Replace the battery and the compartment cover, securing it with the screw.
7. Troubleshooting
If the multimeter is not functioning as expected, refer to the following common issues and solutions:
- No Display: Check battery installation and ensure the battery has sufficient charge. Replace if necessary.
- Incorrect Readings: Ensure test leads are properly connected to the correct input jacks for the selected function. Verify the rotary switch is set to the appropriate measurement mode. Check for damaged test leads.
- Current Measurement Not Working: Check and replace the fuse(s) as described in Section 6.3.
- Auto Shut Down: This is a normal power-saving feature. Simply rotate the switch or press a button to reactivate the meter.
If problems persist, contact customer support.
