EARTHQUAKE SUB6

Earthquake Sound SUB6 Passive 6.5-inch In-Wall/In-Ceiling Subwoofer Instruction Manual

Model: SUB6 | Brand: EARTHQUAKE

1. Introduction and Overview

The Earthquake Sound SUB6 passive subwoofer is designed to deliver impressive bass from a shallow space, making it ideal for in-wall and in-ceiling applications. Featuring the patented Shallow Woofer System (SWS) design, this subwoofer offers twice the excursion of conventional speakers with the same mounting depth. It includes a 100% copper wire crossover network to filter out voices and instruments, ensuring pure bass output. Constructed from high-quality components, the SUB6 is a versatile choice for enhancing audio in new constructions or existing home theaters.

3. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance and safety. This section guides you through the process of installing your SUB6 subwoofer.

3.1 Headroom Requirements

The SUB6 subwoofer has a depth of approximately 3.38 inches. When installing into a ceiling, ensure you have at least 12 inches of clear space (headroom) from the grille to the back of the unit. This allows sufficient room for wiring and securing the additional safety cable.

3.2 Mounting Bracket Assembly

The included metal mounting bracket provides stability, especially for drop ceiling installations. Assemble the two halves of the bracket, ensuring the side walls are pointing upwards. Secure them using the provided screws and bolts. For a drop ceiling, this bracket will sit on top of the ceiling tile to support the subwoofer's weight.

3.3 Cutting the Ceiling Tile

Use the provided cutout template or the mounting bracket itself to mark the circular opening on your ceiling tile. Carefully cut along the marked line using a utility knife or box cutter. It is recommended to make small, controlled cuts and to cut slightly inside the line initially, then trim as needed for a snug fit.

3.4 Securing the Subwoofer

Once the hole is cut, remove the magnetic grille from the subwoofer. Place the subwoofer through the opening in the ceiling tile. Position the mounting bracket over the subwoofer on the back side of the ceiling tile, aligning it with the plastic ring of the subwoofer. Activate the dog-ears by pulling them out and letting them drop. These dog-ears will secure the subwoofer to the ceiling tile. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to tighten the four screws, pulling the dog-ears firmly against the ceiling tile. Be careful not to overtighten and damage the tile.

3.5 Safety Cable Installation

For added safety, always run an extra steel safety cable through the designated loop on the subwoofer and securely attach it to a structural element above the ceiling. Ensure the cable is tight to prevent excessive movement. This provides additional support in case of mounting failure.

3.6 Wiring the Subwoofer

The SUB6 uses a quick-disconnect Euro block terminal for wiring. Loosen the screws on the terminal to insert your speaker wires. The inner two terminals are for the incoming signal, and the outer two terminals are for sending the signal forward in a parallel chain. In a 70V system, all wiring is parallel. Connect positive speaker wire to positive terminals and negative to negative. For the last speaker in a chain, only use the incoming terminals.

4. Operating the SUB6 (70V Tapping)

The SUB6 subwoofer is designed for 70V audio systems, which allow multiple speakers to be connected to a single amplifier without complex impedance matching. Each 70V speaker has a built-in transformer that allows you to select a fixed wattage output.

4.1 Adjusting the Wattage Tap

The SUB6 features a wattage tap switch located under the magnetic grille. This switch allows you to select different power settings (6.25W, 12.5W, 25W, 50W) or bypass the transformer for standard 8-ohm operation. Use a small flathead screwdriver to adjust the tap to your desired wattage. The 8-ohm setting bypasses the internal transformer, allowing the subwoofer to act as a standard speaker.

SUB6 with Grilles

When setting the tap, ensure your 70V amplifier is capable of producing more total wattage than the sum of all tapped speakers in your system. For example, if you have 10 speakers tapped at 10 watts each (100 watts total), your amplifier should be capable of producing at least 110 watts.
