Daiwa Coastal TW Casting Reel User Manual

Model: CLTW200HSL

Introduction

The Daiwa Coastal TW 200 Inshore baitcasting reel is engineered for robust performance in saltwater environments. It features the innovative T-Wing System (TWS) for improved casting distance and reduced backlashing, along with corrosion-resistant ball bearings to withstand harsh conditions. Designed with high-strength gearing and a 100mm swept handle with custom EVA knobs, this reel provides enhanced cranking power. Its 200-size A7075 aircraft-grade aluminum spool offers 35% more line capacity than the 100-size models, making it suitable for a variety of fishing applications. The Ultimate Tournament Drag (UTD) system delivers up to 15.4 lbs of maximum drag, ensuring reliable control over strong fish. This manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your Daiwa Coastal TW Casting Reel.

Setup

1. Spooling Line

  1. Secure the reel to a rod or a stable surface.
  2. Open the T-Wing System (TWS) line guide by flipping it up.
  3. Tie the fishing line to the spool using an arbor knot or similar secure knot.
  4. Close the TWS line guide.
  5. Maintain light tension on the line as you reel it onto the spool, ensuring even distribution. Fill the spool to approximately 1/8 inch from the rim.

2. Mounting the Reel

Attach the reel securely to the reel seat on your fishing rod. Ensure the reel foot is fully seated and the locking nut is tightened to prevent movement during casting and retrieval.

3. Initial Brake Adjustment

The Coastal TW features a magnetic braking system. For initial setup, set the magnetic brake dial to a higher number (e.g., 8-10) to prevent backlashes, especially for beginners. As you gain experience, you can reduce the setting for longer casts.

Operating Instructions

1. Casting

  1. Press the thumb bar to disengage the spool.
  2. Place your thumb lightly on the spool to control line release.
  3. Make your cast. As the lure flies, feather the spool with your thumb to prevent overruns and backlashes.
  4. As the lure hits the water, stop the spool with your thumb to prevent excess line from coming off.

2. Retrieving

Turn the handle clockwise to engage the retrieve. The T-Wing System will automatically guide the line evenly onto the spool during retrieval.

3. Drag Adjustment (UTD)

The star-shaped drag knob, located next to the handle, controls the Ultimate Tournament Drag. Turn it clockwise to increase drag tension and counter-clockwise to decrease it. Adjust the drag to match the breaking strength of your line and the size of the fish you are targeting. A good starting point is to set the drag to approximately 25-30% of your line's breaking strength.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance will extend the life and performance of your Daiwa Coastal TW reel.

  • After Each Use (Saltwater): Rinse the reel thoroughly with fresh water. Do not submerge the reel. Allow it to air dry completely before storage.
  • Lubrication: Periodically apply a small amount of high-quality reel oil to the bearings and moving parts. Consult a professional for internal lubrication if you are not familiar with reel disassembly.
  • Cleaning: Wipe down the exterior of the reel with a soft, damp cloth. Remove any dirt, salt, or debris from the line guide and spool.
  • Storage: Store the reel in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Frequent BacklashesMagnetic brake set too low; thumb control insufficient; spool tension too loose.Increase magnetic brake setting; improve thumb feathering technique; tighten spool tension knob slightly.
Stiff RetrievalLack of lubrication; dirt/debris in gears; damaged bearings.Lubricate moving parts; clean reel thoroughly; if problem persists, seek professional service.
Drag Slipping or InconsistentDrag washers are dry or worn; drag set too loose.Tighten drag knob; if problem persists, drag washers may need cleaning or replacement (professional service recommended).
Line Not Laying EvenlyT-Wing System obstructed; line tension inconsistent during spooling.Check TWS for debris; re-spool line with consistent tension.
