4. Setup
Initial Cleaning:
- Before first use, disassemble all parts and wash them thoroughly with warm water and mild detergent.
- Rinse all components completely to remove any soap residue.
- Dry all parts thoroughly.
- Brew 2-3 batches of coffee using only water (no coffee grounds) to prime the unit and remove any manufacturing residues. Discard this water.
Assembly:
- Ensure the gasket and filter plate are correctly seated in the bottom of the top jug.
- The coffee maker is now ready for use.
5. Operating Instructions
Follow these steps to brew coffee with your Fagor Etnica coffee maker:
- Fill the Water Tank: Unscrew the top jug from the bottom water tank. Fill the bottom water tank with cold water up to the level of the safety valve. Do not overfill.
- Add Coffee Grounds: Insert the filter funnel into the bottom water tank. Fill the filter funnel with finely ground coffee. Do not tamp the coffee. Level the grounds gently.
- Assemble the Coffee Maker: Carefully screw the top jug onto the bottom water tank, ensuring a tight seal. Do not overtighten.
- Place on Heat Source: Place the assembled coffee maker on a stovetop burner over medium heat. For gas stoves, ensure the flame does not extend beyond the base of the coffee maker.
- Brewing: As the water heats, pressure will build, forcing hot water through the coffee grounds and into the top jug. You will hear a gurgling sound as the coffee begins to fill the top chamber.
- Serve: Once the top jug is full of brewed coffee (the gurgling sound will subside), remove the coffee maker from the heat source immediately. Pour and serve the coffee.

6. Cleaning and Maintenance
Regular cleaning and maintenance will ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Fagor Etnica coffee maker.
Daily Cleaning:
- Allow the coffee maker to cool completely before disassembling.
- Discard used coffee grounds.
- Wash all parts (top jug, filter funnel, bottom tank) with warm water and mild detergent.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry completely to prevent water spots and mineral buildup.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads, as these can damage the stainless steel finish.
Periodic Maintenance:
- Gasket and Filter Plate: Periodically inspect the silicone gasket and filter plate for wear or damage. Replace them if they appear cracked, brittle, or if you notice leaks during brewing.
- Descaling: Over time, mineral deposits can build up inside the water tank. To descale, fill the water tank with a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water. Place the coffee maker on the stove and allow the solution to brew through as if making coffee (without grounds). Discard the vinegar solution and rinse thoroughly. Brew 2-3 batches of plain water to remove any vinegar taste.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Coffee does not brew or brews slowly. | Too finely ground coffee, coffee tamped too tightly, obstructed filter, insufficient water, heat too low. | Use coarser grind, do not tamp coffee, clean filter, ensure water is above safety valve, increase heat. |
| Water leaks from the side. | Loose assembly, worn or improperly seated gasket. | Ensure top and bottom sections are tightly screwed together. Inspect and replace gasket if necessary. |
| Coffee tastes burnt or bitter. | Over-extraction (left on heat too long), dirty coffee maker, incorrect coffee grind. | Remove from heat immediately after brewing. Clean thoroughly. Adjust coffee grind. |
| No coffee comes out. | Safety valve obstructed, no water, coffee packed too tightly. | Check and clear safety valve. Ensure water is filled to correct level. Do not tamp coffee. |
