Setup
Battery Installation
The ANENG MT88A requires two AAA 1.5V batteries (not included) for operation.
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the meter.
- Use a screwdriver to open the battery compartment.
- Insert two AAA 1.5V batteries, observing the correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
- Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw.
Connecting Test Leads
For measurements requiring test leads (e.g., voltage, resistance, diode, continuity), connect the red test lead to the "VΩHz" input jack and the black test lead to the "COM" input jack.

Figure 3: Test lead parameters and features, including protective sheath and flexible design.
Operating Instructions
Turn the rotary switch to the desired function to begin measurements.

Figure 4: Visual guide to various measurement modes and their applications.
AC Voltage Measurement
To measure AC voltage:
- Set the rotary switch to the "ACV" position (e.g., 500V~).
- Insert the test leads into the appropriate jacks (red to VΩHz, black to COM).
- Connect the test probes in parallel to the circuit or component under test.
- Read the AC voltage value on the LCD display.
Refer to the top-left section of Figure 4 for an illustration of AC Voltage Measurement.
DC Voltage Measurement
To measure DC voltage:
- Set the rotary switch to the "DCV" position (e.g., 500V=).
- Insert the test leads into the appropriate jacks (red to VΩHz, black to COM).
- Connect the test probes in parallel to the circuit or component under test, observing polarity.
- Read the DC voltage value on the LCD display.
Refer to the middle-left section of Figure 4 for an illustration of DC Voltage Measurement.
AC Current Measurement
To measure AC current:
- Set the rotary switch to the "500A~" position.
- Open the clamp jaw by pressing the trigger.
- Enclose a single conductor (not a bundle of wires) with the clamp jaw. Ensure the jaw is fully closed.
- Read the AC current value on the LCD display.

Figure 6: Demonstrating AC current measurement by clamping around a single wire.
Refer to the bottom-right section of Figure 4 for an illustration of AC Current Measurement.
Resistance Measurement
To measure resistance:
- Set the rotary switch to the "Ω" position (e.g., 20KΩ).
- Insert the test leads into the appropriate jacks.
- Connect the test probes across the component to be measured. Ensure the circuit is de-energized.
- Read the resistance value on the LCD display.
Refer to the middle-right section of Figure 4 for an illustration of Resistance Measurement.
Diode Measurement
To test a diode:
- Set the rotary switch to the "Diode" symbol position.
- Insert the test leads into the appropriate jacks.
- Connect the red test probe to the anode and the black test probe to the cathode of the diode.
- The display will show the forward voltage drop. Reverse the probes to check for open circuit (OL) indicating correct diode function.
Refer to the bottom-left section of Figure 4 for an illustration of Diode Measurement.
Continuity/Buzzer Measurement
To check for continuity:
- Set the rotary switch to the "Buzzer" symbol position.
- Insert the test leads into the appropriate jacks.
- Connect the test probes across the circuit or component.
- If continuity exists (resistance below a certain threshold), the buzzer will sound, and the display will show a low resistance value.
Refer to the top-middle section of Figure 4 for an illustration of Buzzer Measurement.
NCV (Non-Contact Voltage) Detection
To detect AC voltage without contact:
- Set the rotary switch to the "NCV" position.
- Bring the top of the clamp meter close to the AC voltage source (e.g., a live wire or outlet).
- The red light in the middle of the meter will flash, and an alarm buzzer will sound if AC voltage is detected.

Figure 7: NCV detection in progress, showing the meter detecting AC voltage near an outlet.
Refer to the bottom-middle section of Figure 4 for an illustration of NCV Detection.
Firewire Recognition and Zero Line Identification
These functions are typically integrated with NCV or specific probe tests.
Firewire Recognition: When testing for a live wire, the meter will indicate the presence of voltage, often with a specific visual or audible alert. This is usually done by inserting one test lead into a socket or touching a wire, and the meter identifies it as a live (fire) wire.
Refer to the top-right section of Figure 4 for an illustration of Firewire Recognition.
Zero Line Identification: When testing a neutral wire, the meter will typically show no voltage or a specific indication for a neutral (zero) line. This is often done in conjunction with firewire recognition, where the meter differentiates between live and neutral.
Refer to the middle-right section of Figure 4 for an illustration of Zero Line Identification.
Data Hold Function
Press the "HOLD" button to freeze the current reading on the display. Press it again to release the hold function.
Automatic Shutdown
The meter will automatically power off after approximately 15 minutes of inactivity to conserve battery life. To reactivate, turn the rotary switch to OFF and then back to the desired measurement function.
Maintenance
Cleaning
Wipe the meter's casing with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Ensure the meter is dry before storage or use.
Battery Replacement
When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace the batteries as described in the "Battery Installation" section.
Storage
Store the meter in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
Troubleshooting
If the meter is not functioning correctly, refer to the following common issues and solutions:
- No display or faint display: Check battery installation and replace batteries if necessary.
- Incorrect readings: Ensure the correct measurement function is selected and test leads are properly connected. Verify the circuit is de-energized for resistance/diode tests.
- No continuity beep: Check if the circuit has high resistance or is open. Ensure the meter is in continuity mode.
- NCV not detecting: Ensure the meter is in NCV mode and is brought close enough to a live AC source.
If problems persist, contact customer support.
