Leviton SmartlockPro Slim GFCI Instruction Manual

Model: GFNT2-4W | Brand: Leviton

Introduction to GFCI Technology

A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) is a safety device designed to protect against electric shock. It works by detecting imbalances in the electrical current, which can occur when current leaks through an unintended path, such as a person. If a ground fault is detected, the GFCI rapidly trips, cutting off the power to prevent serious injury. The Leviton SmartlockPro Slim GFCI features a self-test function, automatically performing periodic tests to ensure continuous protection.

Important Safety Information

WARNING: Risk of Electric Shock. Installation of this device involves working with electrical wiring. If you are not comfortable or experienced with electrical installations, it is strongly recommended to consult a qualified electrician. Always turn off power at the circuit breaker or fuse box before beginning any electrical work.

  • Ensure power is OFF at the main service panel before installation.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as insulated gloves and safety glasses.
  • Verify the circuit is de-energized using a voltage tester before touching any wires.
  • Follow all local and national electrical codes.

Product Features

Four Leviton GFNT2-4W Self-Test SmartlockPro Slim GFCI outlets in white.

This image displays four individual Leviton GFNT2-4W Self-Test SmartlockPro Slim GFCI outlets. Each outlet features two receptacles, a red 'RESET' button, a black 'TEST' button, and a small green LED indicator light at the bottom. The outlets are designed for easy installation with mounting tabs at the top and bottom.

  • Self-Test Function: The GFCI regularly conducts an automatic internal test to confirm its ability to respond to a ground fault, enhancing safety.
  • Status Indicator Light: A green LED light indicates power and protection status. It also signals line/load reversal if present.
  • Patented Lockout Action: Prevents the GFCI from being reset if it is damaged or unable to provide ground fault protection.
  • Continuous Ground Fault Protection: Detects and trips on actual ground faults even while the self-test is being conducted.
  • Slim, Shallow Design: Reduced depth allows for easier installation in electrical boxes.
  • Non-Tamper-Resistant: Standard receptacle design.
  • 20-Amp Rating: Suitable for 20-amp circuits.

Setup and Installation

Before proceeding, ensure all power to the circuit is disconnected at the main electrical panel. Use a voltage tester to confirm the absence of power at the outlet box.

Wiring Connections:

The Leviton GFCI outlet has clearly marked terminals for wiring. Typically, you will connect the incoming power (LINE) and outgoing power (LOAD) wires, along with the neutral and ground wires. The brass-colored screws are for hot wires, and silver-colored screws are for neutral wires. The green screw is for the ground wire.

  1. Carefully remove the existing outlet, noting the wire connections.
  2. Strip approximately 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of the wires.
  3. Form a hook or loop at the end of each wire.
  4. Connect the incoming hot (black) wire to the brass "LINE" terminal and the incoming neutral (white) wire to the silver "LINE" terminal.
  5. If extending GFCI protection to downstream outlets, connect the outgoing hot (red or black) wire to the brass "LOAD" terminal and the outgoing neutral (white) wire to the silver "LOAD" terminal.
  6. Connect the bare copper or green insulated ground wire to the green ground screw.
  7. Ensure all connections are tight and secure.

Mounting:

Gently fold the wires into the electrical box. Secure the GFCI outlet to the electrical box using the provided mounting screws. Install the wallplate (not included) over the outlet.

Operating Instructions

  • Restoring Power: After installation or a power interruption, turn the power back on at the circuit breaker. Press the red "RESET" button firmly until it clicks and remains depressed. The green LED indicator light should illuminate, indicating power and protection.
  • Testing the GFCI: To manually test the GFCI, press the black "TEST" button. The red "RESET" button should pop out, and the green LED light should turn off, indicating that the GFCI has tripped and cut power. To restore power, press the red "RESET" button again.
  • LED Indicator Status:
    • Green Light ON: Power is present, and the GFCI is providing ground fault protection.
    • Green Light OFF: No power, or the GFCI has tripped.
    • Flashing Red Light: Indicates an issue with the GFCI or wiring. Refer to the Troubleshooting section.

Maintenance

Regular testing is crucial to ensure your GFCI outlet is functioning correctly. It is recommended to test the GFCI monthly to verify its protective capabilities.

  1. Plug a lamp or other device into the GFCI receptacle and turn it on to confirm power.
  2. Press the "TEST" button. The device should turn off, and the "RESET" button should pop out.
  3. Press the "RESET" button. The device should turn back on.
  4. If the GFCI does not trip or reset as described, it may be faulty and should be replaced immediately.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
GFCI will not reset. No power to the GFCI, wiring error, or internal fault.Check circuit breaker. Verify LINE/LOAD wiring. If problem persists, replace GFCI.
GFCI trips frequently.Ground fault in connected appliance or wiring, overloaded circuit.Unplug all devices and reset. If it holds, plug in devices one by one to identify faulty one. Check for damaged appliance cords or wiring. Reduce load on circuit.
Green LED is off.No power, or GFCI has tripped.Check circuit breaker. Press "RESET" button.
Flashing Red LED.Indicates an internal fault or end-of-life.The GFCI needs to be replaced.
