2. Safety Information

4.2 Controls and Connections

The main unit features a central display, two large rotary knobs for navigation and volume control, and several buttons for source selection and playback. Key connections include:

5. Setup

  1. Placement: Place the main unit and speakers on a stable, flat surface. For optimal sound, position the speakers equidistant from the main unit and at ear level when seated. Ensure adequate ventilation space around the unit.
  2. Speaker Connection: Connect the speaker wires from the speakers to the corresponding speaker terminals on the rear of the main unit. Ensure correct polarity (red to red, black to black) for each speaker.
  3. FM Antenna Connection: Connect the supplied FM antenna to the FM antenna input on the rear of the main unit. Extend the antenna fully for best reception.
  4. Power Connection: Plug the power cord into the AC IN socket on the rear of the main unit, then plug the other end into a wall power outlet.
  5. Initial Power On: Press the Power button on the unit or remote control to turn on the system. Follow any on-screen prompts for initial setup, such as language selection and network configuration for Internet Radio and Spotify Connect.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Power On/Off

Press the Power button () on the front panel or the remote control to turn the system on or off. The system will enter standby mode when turned off.

6.2 Source Selection

Press the Source button or use the corresponding buttons on the remote control (e.g., CD, USB, Bluetooth, Radio) to switch between different audio sources.

6.3 CD Playback

  1. Select the CD source.
  2. Press the Open/Close button to open the CD tray.
  3. Place a CD (audio CD or MP3 CD) with the label side facing up into the tray.
  4. Press the Open/Close button again to close the tray. Playback will start automatically.
  5. Use Play/Pause, Stop, Skip, and Search buttons for control.

6.4 USB Playback

  1. Insert a USB storage device into the USB port on the front panel.
  2. Select the USB source.
  3. Navigate through folders and files using the rotary knob or navigation buttons.
  4. Press Play/Pause to start playback.

6.5 Bluetooth Pairing

  1. Select the Bluetooth source. The system will enter pairing mode automatically or you may need to press a dedicated Bluetooth pairing button.
  2. On your Bluetooth-enabled device (e.g., smartphone, tablet), enable Bluetooth and search for available devices.
  3. Select "Philips TAM8905" from the list of devices.
  4. Once paired, you can stream audio from your device to the stereo system.

6.6 Radio Tuning (DAB+/FM & Internet Radio)

  • DAB+/FM Radio: Select the DAB+ or FM source. Use the tuning knob or buttons to scan for stations. For DAB+, perform an auto-scan to find available digital stations.
  • Internet Radio: Ensure the system is connected to your home Wi-Fi network (refer to initial setup). Select the Internet Radio source. Browse stations by genre, location, or search for specific stations.
  • Presets: Save your favorite stations to preset numbers for quick access.

6.7 Spotify Connect

To use Spotify Connect, ensure your system is connected to the internet and you have an active Spotify Premium account. Open the Spotify app on your smartphone, tablet, or computer, and select the Philips TAM8905 as the playback device from the "Devices Available" menu.

6.8 Digital Sound Control

The system features Digital Sound Control (DSC) to optimize sound settings for different music genres. Press the DSC button on the remote control or navigate through the sound settings menu to select from predefined equalizer settings (e.g., Jazz, Rock, Pop, Classical, Balanced).

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning:
    • Wipe the unit and speakers with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
    • Do not use cleaning agents containing alcohol, ammonia, benzene, or abrasives as these may damage the finish.
    • For stubborn marks, lightly dampen the cloth with water and then wipe dry immediately.
  • CD Lens Care: Avoid touching the CD lens. If the lens is dirty, use a commercially available CD lens cleaner.
