Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance and safety. It is recommended to have this amplifier installed by a qualified professional.

Mounting Location

Choose a mounting location that is dry, well-ventilated, and away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Ensure sufficient space around the amplifier for air circulation. Common locations include under a seat or in the trunk.

Wiring Connections

Refer to Figure 4 for the power and speaker output panel layout.

  1. Power Connection (+12V): Connect a heavy-gauge power cable (e.g., 8-gauge or 4-gauge depending on total system power) from the vehicle's positive battery terminal to the +12V terminal on the amplifier. Install an inline fuse holder (not supplied) within 18 inches of the battery.
  2. Ground Connection (GND): Connect a heavy-gauge ground cable of the same size as the power cable from the GND terminal on the amplifier to a clean, unpainted metal surface on the vehicle's chassis. Ensure a solid, low-resistance connection.
  3. Remote Turn-On (REM): Connect a remote turn-on wire from your head unit's remote output to the REM terminal on the amplifier. This wire turns the amplifier on and off with your head unit.
  4. Speaker Outputs: Connect your speakers to the appropriate speaker output terminals (CH1, CH2, CH3, CH4). Pay close attention to polarity (+ and -). Refer to the "Operating Modes" section for different wiring configurations (stereo, bridged).
  5. Input Connections: Refer to Figure 3 for the input and control panel layout.
    • RCA Inputs (Low Level): Connect RCA cables from your head unit's pre-amp outputs to the CH1/CH2 and CH3/CH4 RCA inputs on the amplifier.
    • High Level Inputs: If your head unit does not have RCA outputs, use the supplied high-level input harness (if included) to connect directly to your head unit's speaker wires. Connect the vehicle's speaker wires to the corresponding high-level input terminals (CH1, CH2, CH3, CH4).

Operating Instructions

Initial Power-Up

After all connections are made, reconnect the vehicle's battery. Turn on your head unit. The "PWR" indicator LED on the amplifier should illuminate, indicating it is receiving power and operating correctly. If the "PRT" (Protection) LED illuminates, there may be a wiring issue or fault; refer to the Troubleshooting section.

Adjusting Controls

Refer to Figure 3 for the input and control panel layout.

  • Level (Gain) Control: This control matches the amplifier's input sensitivity to the output level of your head unit. Start with the gain set to minimum (MIN). Play a familiar track at about 75% of your head unit's maximum volume. Slowly increase the amplifier's gain until you hear slight distortion, then back off slightly.
  • Filter Control (CH1/CH2 and CH3/CH4):
    • HPF (High Pass Filter): Allows frequencies above the set point to pass through. Useful for full-range speakers to prevent low bass distortion. Adjustable from 40Hz to 400Hz.
    • FULL: Allows all frequencies to pass through.
    • LPF (Low Pass Filter): Allows frequencies below the set point to pass through. Useful for subwoofers. Adjustable from 40Hz to 400Hz. (Note: LPF is only available on CH3/CH4 filter control).
  • Bass Boost (CH3/CH4): Provides an adjustable bass boost at 45Hz. Adjustable from 0dB to 12dB. Use sparingly to avoid distortion and speaker damage.

Operating Modes

The Autotek AYA-1100.4 amplifier supports several configurations:

  • 4-Channel Stereo: Connect four full-range speakers, one to each channel.
  • Dual Bridged Mono: Bridge channels 1&2 for one mono output and channels 3&4 for another mono output. This configuration provides two high-power mono outputs, ideal for driving two subwoofers or high-power mid-bass speakers. Ensure speakers are rated for the bridged impedance (typically 4 ohms minimum).
  • Stereo + Bridged Mono: Connect two speakers in stereo to channels 1&2, and bridge channels 3&4 for a single subwoofer.

Note on Bridging:

When bridging channels, connect the speaker's positive (+) terminal to the positive (+) terminal of the first channel (e.g., CH1+) and the speaker's negative (-) terminal to the negative (-) terminal of the second channel (e.g., CH2-). Always ensure the speaker impedance meets the minimum requirements for bridged operation (typically 4 ohms per bridged channel pair).

Maintenance

The Autotek AYA-1100.4 amplifier requires minimal maintenance.

  • Cleaning: Periodically wipe the amplifier's exterior with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Ventilation: Ensure that the amplifier's cooling fins are not obstructed by debris or other objects. Proper airflow is essential for preventing overheating.
  • Connections: Occasionally check all wiring connections to ensure they are secure and free from corrosion. Loose connections can lead to poor performance or damage.

Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your amplifier, consult the following table before seeking professional service.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Amplifier does not turn on (PWR LED off)
  • Blown fuse (inline or amplifier)
  • Loose or disconnected power/ground/remote wire
  • Faulty head unit remote output
  • Check and replace fuse if necessary (use correct amperage).
  • Verify all power, ground, and remote connections are secure.
  • Test remote wire for +12V when head unit is on.
Protection (PRT) LED is on
  • Speaker wire short circuit
  • Speaker impedance too low
  • Overheating
  • DC offset detected
  • Check speaker wires for shorts (bare wire touching chassis or other wires).
  • Ensure speaker impedance meets amplifier specifications (e.g., 2 ohms stereo, 4 ohms bridged).
  • Allow amplifier to cool down; ensure proper ventilation.
  • Disconnect inputs and speakers; if PRT LED remains on, amplifier may be faulty.
No audio output
  • RCA/High-level input cables disconnected or faulty
  • Speaker wires disconnected or incorrect polarity
  • Gain setting too low
  • Head unit volume too low or muted
  • Verify input cable connections and integrity.
  • Check all speaker wire connections and ensure correct polarity.
  • Adjust amplifier gain (level) control.
  • Increase head unit volume and check mute settings.
Distorted audio
  • Gain setting too high
  • Speaker impedance too low
  • Poor ground connection
  • Damaged speakers
  • Reduce amplifier gain.
  • Verify speaker impedance is within amplifier's acceptable range.
  • Ensure ground connection is clean and secure.
  • Test speakers with another amplifier if possible.
