Introduction
This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the operation and maintenance of your Nikon FE 35mm Single Lens Reflex (SLR) film camera. The Nikon FE is designed to accept Nikon manual focus lenses, including AI and AIS types. It also supports Non-AI lenses with stop-down metering. This camera has been thoroughly serviced to ensure optimal performance.
Setup
Battery Installation
The Nikon FE requires two P76 batteries for operation. Locate the battery compartment, typically on the bottom of the camera. Insert the batteries according to the polarity indicators within the compartment. Ensure the compartment cover is securely closed after installation.
Lens Attachment
To attach a lens, align the red dot on the lens barrel with the red dot on the camera's lens mount. Gently insert the lens and rotate it clockwise until it clicks into place. The Nikon FE is compatible with Nikon AI and AIS manual focus lenses. Non-AI lenses can also be used with stop-down metering, which requires manual adjustment of the aperture ring on the lens.
Loading Film
To load a 35mm film roll, first open the camera back. This is typically done by pulling up the film rewind knob. Insert the film cartridge into the film chamber on the left side. Pull the film leader across to the take-up spool on the right and insert it into one of the slots. Advance the film slightly using the film advance lever to ensure it catches on the sprocket teeth. Close the camera back firmly. Advance the film two frames, pressing the shutter release each time, to ensure the film is properly loaded and to bypass the exposed leader. The film counter should then indicate '1'.

Exposure Modes
The Nikon FE offers both automatic and manual exposure control. In Automatic Exposure (AE) mode, the camera selects the appropriate shutter speed based on the aperture set on the lens and the light meter reading. For Manual mode, you set both the shutter speed and aperture independently, using the in-viewfinder meter to guide your exposure.
Shutter Speed and Aperture
Adjust the shutter speed using the dial on the top plate of the camera. Aperture is controlled via the ring on the lens. In AE mode, set the shutter speed dial to 'A' (Auto). In manual mode, select your desired shutter speed. Adjust the aperture on the lens to achieve the desired depth of field and exposure.
Focusing
The Nikon FE is a manual focus camera. Look through the viewfinder and rotate the focusing ring on your lens until the image appears sharp. The split-image rangefinder and microprism collar in the viewfinder assist with precise focusing.
Taking a Picture
- Ensure film is loaded and advanced.
- Set your desired exposure mode (Auto or Manual).
- Focus the lens on your subject.
- Compose your shot through the viewfinder.
- Gently press the shutter release button to take the picture.
- Advance the film using the film advance lever to prepare for the next shot.
Maintenance
To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Nikon FE camera, regular maintenance is recommended. Keep the camera clean by gently wiping the body with a soft, dry cloth. Use a lens brush or air blower to remove dust from the lens and viewfinder. Avoid touching the lens elements directly. Store the camera in a dry, dust-free environment, ideally with a desiccant to prevent moisture buildup. Remove batteries if the camera will not be used for an extended period.
Troubleshooting
- Camera not powering on: Check battery installation and ensure batteries are fresh.
- Film not advancing: Verify that the film leader is properly engaged with the take-up spool and sprocket teeth. Ensure the film rewind knob rotates when advancing film.
- Exposure issues: Confirm correct ISO setting, check light meter readings, and ensure lens aperture is set appropriately for the chosen exposure mode.
- Shutter not firing: Ensure the film advance lever is fully wound. Check battery power.
