1. Product Overview

The QNAP TS-1273AU-RP-8G-US is a high-performance 12-bay rackmount Network Attached Storage (NAS) device designed for demanding business applications. It features an AMD Ryzen V1500B quad-core processor, two 2.5GbE ports, and a redundant power supply for enhanced reliability and performance.

2. Setup and Installation

2.1 Rack Mounting

1. Ensure the rack is stable and properly grounded.
2. Install the rack rails (not included) into your server rack according to the rail kit's instructions.
3. Carefully slide the NAS unit onto the installed rack rails until it clicks into place.
4. Secure the NAS to the rack using the provided rack screws.

2.2 Hard Drive Installation

1. Unlock and pull out a drive tray from the NAS.
2. For 3.5-inch HDDs: Place the HDD into the tray and secure it with four flat head screws (for 3.5" HDD) through the side holes.
3. For 2.5-inch SSDs/HDDs: Place the drive into the tray and secure it with four flat head screws (for 2.5" HDD) through the bottom holes.
4. Slide the drive tray back into the NAS until it locks securely. Repeat for all desired drives.

2.3 Connecting Cables

1. Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to a 2.5GbE port on the NAS and the other end to your network switch or router.
2. Connect both power cords to the redundant power supply units at the rear of the NAS.
3. Plug the other ends of the power cords into separate, grounded power outlets or a UPS.

2.4 Initial Power On

Press the power button on the front panel of the NAS. The system will begin to boot up. Wait for the status LED to indicate that the system is ready (refer to the LED indicator section for details).

3. Operating the NAS

3.1 Accessing QTS (Operating System)

1. Ensure your computer is on the same network as the NAS.
2. Open a web browser and enter the NAS IP address or use the QNAP Qfinder Pro utility to locate the NAS.
3. Log in with the default username (admin) and password (admin). You will be prompted to change the password during the initial setup wizard.

3.2 Initial Configuration Wizard

Follow the on-screen instructions of the QTS initial setup wizard to:

• Set a new administrator password.
• Configure network settings (DHCP or static IP).
• Update firmware.
• Create storage pools and volumes.

3.3 Creating Storage Pools and Volumes

1. In QTS, navigate to Storage & Snapshots.
2. Click New Storage Pool and follow the wizard to select drives, RAID type, and allocate capacity.
3. After creating a storage pool, click New Volume to create a thick, thin, or static volume.

3.4 User and Shared Folder Management

1. Go to Control Panel > Privilege > Users to create new user accounts and groups.
2. Go to Control Panel > Privilege > Shared Folders to create new shared folders and set access permissions for users and groups.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Firmware Updates

Regularly update the QTS firmware to ensure optimal performance, security, and access to new features. Navigate to Control Panel > System > Firmware Update to check for and apply updates.

4.2 Drive Health Check

Monitor the health of your hard drives. Go to Storage & Snapshots > Disks/VJBOD. Select a drive and click Health Info to view S.M.A.R.T. data and perform a quick or full scan.

4.3 System Backup

Implement a robust backup strategy for your NAS data. Utilize QNAP's Hybrid Backup Sync application to back up data to local storage, remote NAS, cloud services, or external devices.

4.4 Cleaning

Periodically clean the exterior of the NAS with a soft, dry cloth. Ensure ventilation openings are free from dust accumulation to prevent overheating. Do not use liquid cleaners directly on the unit.

• Cannot access NAS:
  • Check network cable connections.
  • Verify NAS power status.
  • Use Qfinder Pro to locate the NAS and check its IP address.
  • Ensure your computer's firewall is not blocking access.
• Drive failure indicated:
  • Identify the failed drive using the drive LED or QTS Storage & Snapshots.
  • If configured in a RAID array, replace the failed drive with a new, compatible drive. The RAID will rebuild automatically.
  • Consult QNAP support if data loss is suspected or RAID rebuild fails.
• System performance is slow:
  • Check CPU and RAM usage in QTS Resource Monitor.
  • Verify network bandwidth utilization.
  • Ensure drives are healthy and not experiencing high I/O.
  • Consider upgrading RAM if consistently high usage is observed.

5.3 System Reset

The NAS features a reset button. Pressing it for:

• 3 seconds: Resets network settings and administrator password to default.
• 10 seconds: Resets all system settings to factory defaults, but retains user data on the drives.

Warning: Performing a system reset should be done with caution. Always back up critical configuration settings before proceeding.
