4.1. Setting the Plane

5.1. General Operation

For best results, hold the plane at an angle of up to 45 degrees when pulling or pushing across the edge of the wood. This angle allows the blade to slice through the wood fibers more effectively, especially on end grain.

5.2. Honing the Blade

The recommended cutting edge has a 25° ground angle and a 30° honed angle.

1. Use a flat oilstone, lubricated with a thin machine oil.
2. Hold the blade at a 30° degree angle to the stone, hone until a burr is formed (Refer to FIG.1 in the diagram).
3. Remove the burr by lightly rubbing the blade, bevel side up, on the oilstone (Refer to FIG.2 in the diagram).

If the edge is damaged, the bevel rounded, or the angle changed, re-grind the edge. The honed edge can be shaped straight with round corners for finishing work or curved for coarse stock removal (Refer to FIG.3 in the diagram).

6.1. Storage

To store the plane, retract the blade into the body of the plane. Clean and lightly oil all metal parts to prevent rust. Place the plane on its side when not in use to protect the blade.
