4. Setup and Installation
Proper installation is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of your MPPT Pro Duo controller. It is highly recommended to have the device installed by a qualified technician.
4.1 Mounting Location
- Mount the controller vertically on a non-flammable surface.
- Ensure adequate air circulation around the cooling fins at the back of the unit.
- Avoid locations exposed to direct sunlight, high temperatures, or moisture.
4.2 Wiring Sequence
Follow the wiring sequence below to prevent damage to the controller or batteries. Always connect and disconnect in the specified order.
- Connect Battery 1: Connect the positive and negative terminals of Battery 1 (house battery) to the corresponding BATT1 terminals on the controller. Ensure correct polarity.
- Connect Battery 2: Connect the positive and negative terminals of Battery 2 (starter battery) to the corresponding BATT2 terminals on the controller. Ensure correct polarity.
- Connect Solar Panels: Connect the positive and negative leads from your solar panel array to the PV terminals on the controller. Ensure correct polarity and that the open-circuit voltage (Voc) of your solar array does not exceed 100V.
- Connect Temperature Sensor: If using an external temperature sensor, connect it to the designated port. The controller also has an integrated sensor.
- Grounding: Connect the grounding terminal of the controller to an earth ground.
Important: Always connect batteries first, then solar panels. Disconnect in the reverse order: solar panels first, then batteries.
4.3 Battery Type Setting
After connecting the batteries, you must set the correct battery type for Battery 1 using the SET button on the front panel. Battery 2 is fixed to Lead-Acid type.
- Press and hold the SET button for approximately 5 seconds until the battery type indicator for BATT1 starts flashing.
- Press the SET button repeatedly to cycle through the available battery types: SEAL (Sealed Lead-Acid), GEL, FLD (Flooded Lead-Acid), LiFePO4, Li-NiCoMn.
- Once the desired battery type is selected, wait for 5 seconds without pressing any button. The controller will automatically save the setting and exit the configuration mode.
5. Operating Instructions
Once installed and configured, the MPPT Pro Duo will automatically begin charging your batteries. Monitor the LED indicators for operational status.
5.1 LED Indicators
| Indicator | Description |
|---|---|
| MPPT | Indicates MPPT charging mode is active. |
| TEMP | Indicates temperature sensor status or fault. |

6. Maintenance
The Offgridtec MPPT Pro Duo is designed for minimal maintenance. However, regular checks can ensure optimal performance and longevity.
- Visual Inspection: Periodically inspect the controller for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
- Cleanliness: Keep the controller clean and free from dust and debris. Ensure the cooling fins are not obstructed. Use a dry cloth for cleaning.
- Connection Checks: Annually, or as needed, verify that all wiring connections are secure and free from corrosion.
- Battery Health: Regularly check the health and charge level of your batteries, especially flooded lead-acid batteries which may require water replenishment.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your MPPT Pro Duo controller, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps. For more complex problems, contact Offgridtec support.
7.1 No Charging Activity
- Check Solar Panel Connection: Ensure solar panels are correctly connected to the PV terminals and receiving sufficient sunlight. Verify panel voltage.
- Check Battery Connections: Confirm both Battery 1 and Battery 2 are securely connected with correct polarity.
- Verify Battery Type: Ensure the correct battery type is selected for Battery 1. An incorrect setting can prevent proper charging.
- Insufficient Solar Input: If using a small solar panel (e.g., 100W), it might not provide enough power to charge two batteries effectively, especially if one is deeply discharged. Consider increasing solar capacity or prioritizing one battery.
7.2 Bluetooth/App Connectivity Issues (Optional Accessory)
- Reinstall App: Try uninstalling and reinstalling the Offgridtec app on your mobile device.
- Check Location Permissions: Ensure the app has location services permissions enabled on your device. This is often required for Bluetooth scanning.
- Verify Adapter Connection: Ensure the Bluetooth adapter (if used) is correctly connected to the RS485 port.
- Alternative Passwords: If prompted for a password, try common defaults or consult the adapter's specific manual.
