1. Introduction

The Scheppach DM600VARIO Wood Lathe is designed for turning wood and soft materials in a home workshop environment. Its compact and lightweight design makes it suitable for small workspaces, offering optimal stability when securely mounted to a workbench. This lathe is ideal for beginners and model makers, allowing for the machining of workpieces up to 60 cm in length and 25 cm in diameter.

2. Safety Instructions

Always observe basic safety precautions to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and personal injury when operating power tools.

General Safety Warnings:

4. Setup

4.1 Unpacking and Inspection:

1. Carefully remove all components from the packaging.
2. Inspect the machine for any signs of damage that may have occurred during transit. If damage is found, do not operate the machine and contact your supplier.
3. Ensure all listed components and accessories are present.

4.2 Mounting the Lathe:

The DM600VARIO must be securely bolted to a stable workbench to ensure optimal stability and reduce vibration during operation.

• Position the lathe on a sturdy, level workbench.
• Use appropriate bolts and washers (included) to fasten the lathe's base to the workbench through the designated mounting holes.
• Ensure all fasteners are tightened securely.

4.3 Attaching Components:

1. Tool Rest: Slide the tool rest base onto the machine bed and secure it at the desired position using its locking mechanism.
2. Tailstock: Slide the tailstock onto the machine bed. It can be moved closer to or further from the headstock and locked into place with its quick-release lever.
3. Drive Center (Headstock): Insert the 4-tooth drive center into the headstock spindle.
4. Live Center (Tailstock): Insert the live center into the tailstock quill.

5.1 Workpiece Preparation:

• Select a suitable piece of wood, free from knots, cracks, or foreign objects.
• Ensure the workpiece dimensions do not exceed the lathe's capacity (max. 60 cm length, 25 cm diameter).
• Mark the center points on both ends of the workpiece for mounting between centers.

5.2 Mounting the Workpiece:

• Between Centers: Place one end of the workpiece onto the headstock's 4-tooth drive center. Bring the tailstock forward and engage its live center into the marked center of the workpiece. Lock the tailstock firmly on the machine bed and advance the tailstock quill to apply sufficient pressure to hold the workpiece securely.
• On Faceplate: For irregular or short workpieces, attach the workpiece to the 80mm faceplate using screws. Then, screw the faceplate onto the M18 threaded spindle of the headstock.

5.3 Adjusting the Tool Rest:

• Position the tool rest as close as possible to the workpiece without touching it.
• Ensure the top of the tool rest is slightly below the center line of the workpiece.
• Lock the tool rest securely in place.

5.4 Setting Speed and Operation:

1. Speed Adjustment: Use the rotary knob on the headstock to set the desired spindle speed. The variable speed ranges from 800 to 3000 rpm. Start with a lower speed for roughing and larger diameters, increasing as the workpiece becomes balanced and smaller.
2. Power On: Press the green 'I' button to start the lathe.
3. Turning: With the workpiece rotating, gently bring your turning tool into contact with the workpiece, resting it on the tool rest. Apply steady pressure to remove material.
4. Power Off: To stop the lathe, press the red 'O' button.
