4. Setup

Follow these steps to set up your Bearware Weather Station.

4.1 Powering the Main Unit

  1. Connect the provided power adapter to the DC 5V input port on the back of the main unit. Plug the adapter into a wall outlet.
  2. Alternatively, for temporary use or as a backup, insert 3 x AAA 1.5V batteries (not included) into the battery compartment. Note that when operating on batteries only, the backlight will only illuminate briefly and turn off after 5 seconds to conserve power.

4.2 Installing Batteries in the External Sensor

  1. Open the battery compartment on the external sensor.
  2. Insert 2 x AA 1.5V batteries (not included), ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  3. Close the battery compartment securely.

4.3 Pairing the External Sensor

The main unit and external sensor should automatically pair upon initial power-up. If pairing does not occur:

  1. Ensure both the main unit and external sensor have power.
  2. Press and hold the 'CHANNEL/+' button on the main unit to initiate a search for the sensor.
  3. On the external sensor, press the 'RESET' button (usually a small pinhole button) to force a re-transmission.
  4. Keep the sensor away from metal objects and other electronic devices (e.g., TVs, PCs) during pairing and operation to prevent interference.
  5. The maximum effective range between the sensor and main unit is 30m indoors and up to 100m in open fields.

4.4 Initial Time and Date Setup (DCF)

The weather station automatically synchronizes its time and date via the DCF radio signal received by the external sensor. This process may take several minutes or hours, especially during the first setup. Ensure the external sensor is placed in a location where it can receive a clear signal.

  • The DCF receiver is located within the external sensor.
  • The time will be set with atomic clock precision.
  • Daylight Saving Time (DST) adjustments are also handled automatically.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Displaying Weather Data

Once set up, the main unit continuously displays current indoor and outdoor conditions, along with forecast information.

  • Temperature and Humidity: Outdoor values are on the left, indoor values on the right.
  • Weather Forecast: Icons in the center indicate predicted weather conditions.
  • Barometer: Displays air pressure readings.
  • Moon Phase: Shows the current phase of the moon.
  • Time and Date: Automatically updated via DCF signal.

5.2 Setting Alarms

The weather station includes a dual alarm function and temperature alarms.

  • Time Alarm: Use the 'ALARM' button to set and activate the time alarm. The integrated snooze button allows for temporary silencing.
  • Temperature Alarm: Set high and low temperature alerts for both indoor and outdoor readings. The device will notify you if temperatures exceed or fall below your programmed thresholds.

5.3 Adjusting Backlight

Use the 'LIGHT' switch on the back of the main unit to select backlight settings:

  • AUTO: Backlight adjusts automatically based on ambient light.
  • HI: High brightness level.
  • LO: Low brightness level.

6. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and accuracy of your weather station, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Wipe the main unit and sensor with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace batteries in the external sensor and main unit (if used) when the low battery indicator appears on the display.
  • Placement: Ensure the external sensor is protected from direct rain and sunlight, but still in a location that allows for accurate readings and good signal reception. The external sensor has an IPX4 rating, meaning it is splash-proof.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Bearware Weather Station, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  • No outdoor temperature/humidity display:
      - Check if the external sensor batteries are correctly installed or need replacement.
      - Ensure the external sensor is within range (max 30m indoors, 100m open field) and not obstructed by metal objects or electronic devices.
      - Try re-pairing the sensor (see Section 4.3).
  • Incorrect time/date:
      - Ensure the external sensor is in a location with good DCF signal reception.
      - Allow sufficient time for the DCF signal to synchronize (can take several hours).
      - Manually set the time if DCF signal is consistently unavailable (refer to specific button instructions on the device, typically 'TIME SET').
  • Display is dim or off:
      - If using batteries, the backlight only illuminates briefly. Connect the power adapter for continuous backlight.
      - Check the 'LIGHT' switch setting on the back of the main unit.
  • Inaccurate readings:
      - Ensure the main unit and external sensor are not exposed to direct heat sources, cold drafts, or direct sunlight, which can affect readings.
      - Allow the devices to stabilize for a period after initial setup or battery replacement.
