2. Setup

2.1 Unpacking and Placement

Carefully remove the machine from its packaging. Place the machine on a stable, flat surface with adequate lighting. Ensure there is enough space around the machine for comfortable operation and fabric handling.

2.2 Power Connection

Connect the power cord to the machine's power socket and then to a suitable electrical outlet. Ensure the machine's power switch is in the 'off' position before connecting. The foot pedal connects to a separate socket on the machine.

2.3 Attaching the Extension Table

The Bernette B77 includes a large extension table for increased workspace, particularly useful for quilting and larger projects. Slide the extension table onto the free arm until it clicks securely into place.

2.4 Bobbin Winding

Refer to the machine's threading guides for correct bobbin winding. Place the thread spool on the spool pin, guide the thread through the tension discs, and then onto the empty bobbin. Engage the bobbin winder and press the foot pedal or start/stop button to begin winding. The machine will automatically stop when the bobbin is full.

2.5 Threading the Machine

Follow the numbered threading path indicated on the machine. Ensure the presser foot is raised to open the tension discs. Guide the thread through all necessary points, including the take-up lever, and finally through the needle eye. The integrated needle threader can assist with threading the needle.

2.6 Inserting the Bobbin

The Bernette B77 features a convenient drop-in bobbin system. Open the bobbin cover plate, insert the wound bobbin with the thread unwinding in the correct direction (usually counter-clockwise), and guide the thread through the bobbin tension slot. Replace the cover plate.

3. Operating Instructions

3.1 Stitch Selection

The Bernette B77 offers comprehensive stitch options. Use the control panel and display to navigate and select your desired stitch. The display will show the selected stitch number, along with recommended stitch width and length settings.

3.2 Adjusting Stitch Width and Length

After selecting a stitch, you can adjust its width and length using the dedicated buttons on the control panel. The display will update to show your chosen settings. Adjustments allow for fine-tuning stitch appearance for various fabrics and project requirements.

3.3 Start/Stop Button and Speed Control

The machine can be operated using the foot pedal or the start/stop button. The speed control slider allows you to adjust the sewing speed, providing greater control for intricate work or when learning. The needle up/down function allows you to stop the needle in either the up or down position, which is useful for pivoting fabric.

3.4 Reverse Stitch and Lock Stitch

To reinforce seams, use the reverse stitch button to sew backward. The machine also features an automatic lock stitch function, which ties off the beginning and end of straight and decorative stitches for added security.

3.5 Using Presser Feet

The Bernette B77 comes with an 8-piece presser foot set, designed for a diverse array of projects. Each foot is specialized for tasks such as quilting, zipper insertion, buttonholes, and more. Ensure the correct presser foot is attached for your chosen stitch and fabric type. The presser foot lifter is located at the back of the needle area.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Cleaning

Regularly clean the bobbin area, feed dogs, and tension discs to remove lint and thread buildup. Use a small brush or lint remover. Always disconnect the machine from the power supply before cleaning.

4.2 Oiling

Consult your full user manual for specific oiling points and frequency. Use only high-quality sewing machine oil. Over-oiling can attract more lint and cause issues.

4.3 Needle Replacement

Replace needles frequently, especially when working with different fabric types or if the needle becomes dull or bent. A dull needle can cause skipped stitches, fabric damage, or needle breakage. Always use the correct needle type and size for your fabric.

5. Troubleshooting

5.1 Skipped Stitches

If the machine is skipping stitches, check the needle. Ensure it is inserted correctly, is not bent, and is the appropriate type and size for your fabric. Re-thread the machine, both top thread and bobbin, ensuring proper tension.

5.2 Thread Breakage

Thread breakage can be caused by incorrect threading, improper tension, a damaged needle, or poor quality thread. Verify the threading path, adjust tension, replace the needle, and ensure you are using good quality all-purpose sewing thread.

5.3 Fabric Jamming

Fabric jamming often occurs if the presser foot is not lowered before sewing, or if the wrong presser foot is used. Ensure the presser foot is down and matches your sewing task. Do not force fabric through the machine.
