4. Setup
4.1 Battery Installation
- Locate the battery cover on the handle of the device.
- Open the battery cover.
- Insert the required batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-). The device is battery operated.
- Close the battery cover securely.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Basic Temperature Measurement
- Point the infrared sensor towards the target object.
- Press and hold the measurement trigger. The laser indicator will activate to help aim.
- The measured temperature will be displayed on the LCD screen. Release the trigger to hold the reading.
5.2 Emissivity Adjustment
Emissivity (ε) is crucial for accurate infrared temperature readings. Different materials have different emissivities. The MESTEK IR02B allows adjustment from 0.1 to 1.0.

Image 5.1: Example of emissivity settings for different materials. Aluminum has an emissivity of 0.3, while ice has an emissivity of 0.98. The device allows adjustment from 0.1 to 1.0 for better accuracy.
- In measurement mode, press the 'Mode' button until the emissivity symbol (ε) flashes.
- Use the 'Up' and 'Down' keys to adjust the emissivity value according to the material being measured.
- Press the 'Mode' button again to confirm and exit.
5.3 Alarm Modes
The device features two alarm modes: Mildew Alarm and Temperature Difference Alarm.

Image 5.2: Display examples for Mildew Alarm Mode and Temperature Difference Alarm Mode. The Mildew Alarm uses green (normal), yellow (trend to mildew), and red (moldy) lights. The Temperature Difference Alarm uses green (difference less than 41°F/5°C), red (difference more than 41°F/5°C), and yellow (otherwise) lights.
- Mildew Alarm Mode: Indicates potential mildew growth based on temperature and humidity. Green light for normal, yellow for trend to mildew, red for moldy conditions.
- Temperature Difference Alarm Mode: Alerts when the temperature difference between two points exceeds a set threshold. Green light for differences less than 41°F/5°C, red for differences more than 41°F/5°C, and yellow for other conditions.
To set alarm limits, use the 'Mode' button to navigate to the alarm setting interface and adjust values with the 'Up' and 'Down' keys.
5.4 K-Type Thermocouple Measurement
For contact temperature measurement, the device supports a K-Type thermocouple (included).

Image 5.3: Demonstrates K-Type thermocouple measurement. The K-Type temperature measurement range is 14°F~932°F (-10°C~500°C). The thermocouple is included with the device.
- Insert the K-Type thermocouple into the designated port on the device.
- Select the K-Type measurement mode using the 'Mode' button.
- Place the thermocouple probe in contact with the object to be measured.
- The temperature reading from the thermocouple will be displayed.
5.5 Unit Selection
To switch between Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F), press and hold the 'Mode' button for a few seconds until the unit changes.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Cleaning
To clean the device, wipe it with a clean, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure the infrared lens and humidity sensor are kept clean and free from dust or debris for accurate readings.
6.2 Battery Replacement
When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace the batteries promptly to ensure continuous operation and accuracy. Refer to Section 4.1 for battery installation instructions.
6.3 Storage
Store the device in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
7. Troubleshooting
- No Display/Device Not Turning On: Check battery installation and ensure batteries are not depleted. Replace if necessary.
- Inaccurate Readings: Verify emissivity settings for the target material. Ensure the sensor lens is clean. Avoid measuring through glass or highly reflective surfaces.
- Laser Not Working: Check if the laser is enabled via the 'Mode' button. If not, replace batteries.
- Alarm Not Functioning: Ensure alarm limits are correctly set and the alarm mode is active.
