3. Setup and Installation
3.1 Unpacking
Carefully unpack the camera and all accessories. Verify that all components are present according to the product packaging list. If any items are missing or damaged, contact your vendor immediately.
3.2 Mounting the Camera
The VIVOTEK FD9187-H is designed for indoor ceiling mount installation. Ensure the mounting surface is strong enough to support the camera's weight.
- Choose a suitable location for installation, ensuring optimal field of view and network access.
- Use the provided mounting template (if applicable) to mark drilling points on the ceiling.
- Drill pilot holes and insert wall anchors if necessary.
- Secure the camera's mounting base to the ceiling using appropriate screws.
- Connect the necessary cables before fully securing the camera body.
3.3 Network Connection
The camera connects to your network via an RJ45 Ethernet cable. It also supports Wi-Fi for wireless connectivity.
- Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to the camera's RJ45 port.
- Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to a network switch or router.
- For Wi-Fi setup, refer to the camera's web interface or VIVOTEK's official software for wireless configuration after initial wired connection.

3.4 Power Connection
The camera can be powered via AC/DC power source. If using Power over Ethernet (PoE), ensure your network switch or injector supports PoE standards.
4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Initial Access and Configuration
After connecting the camera to your network and power, use VIVOTEK's IP Search utility or access the camera's default IP address via a web browser to begin configuration. You will typically be prompted to set a new password for security.
4.2 Video Streaming and Recording
Access the camera's web interface to view live video streams. Configure recording settings, including resolution (up to 5MP), frame rate (up to 30fps at 5MP, 60fps at 1080p), and storage options (e.g., network attached storage, local SD card if supported).
4.3 Smart Features
- WDR Pro: This feature automatically adjusts image exposure to provide clear video in scenes with both very bright and very dark areas. Ensure it is enabled in settings for optimal performance in high-contrast environments.
- Smart IR: The camera's infrared illuminators automatically adjust intensity to prevent overexposure of objects close to the camera, ensuring balanced night vision.
- PIR Sensor: The built-in Passive Infrared (PIR) sensor detects human movement based on heat signatures. Configure alert actions (e.g., email notification, recording trigger) in the camera's settings.
- Smart Motion Detection: This advanced motion detection system helps reduce false alarms by distinguishing between relevant and irrelevant movements. Adjust sensitivity and detection zones as needed.
- Smart Stream III: Configure Smart Stream III to dynamically adjust video quality and bitrate, optimizing bandwidth usage without compromising critical details.
4.4 Alert Configuration
The camera supports motion-only alerts. Configure alert triggers and responses through the web interface. This may include sending notifications, initiating recordings, or triggering external devices.
5. Maintenance
5.1 Cleaning
Regularly clean the camera's dome cover with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, use a mild, non-abrasive cleaning solution applied to the cloth, not directly to the camera. Avoid harsh chemicals that could damage the lens or housing.
5.2 Firmware Updates
Periodically check the VIVOTEK official website for firmware updates. Keeping your camera's firmware up-to-date ensures optimal performance, security enhancements, and access to new features. Follow the instructions provided with the firmware update package carefully.
5.3 Network Security
Ensure your network is secure to protect your camera from unauthorized access. Use strong, unique passwords for the camera and your Wi-Fi network. Consider network segmentation or VPNs for enhanced security.
6. Troubleshooting
6.1 No Video Feed
- Check power connection: Ensure the camera is receiving power.
- Check network connection: Verify the Ethernet cable is securely connected and the network is operational. For Wi-Fi, check signal strength and network settings.
- Verify IP address: Ensure the camera has a valid IP address and is accessible on the network.
- Restart camera: Power cycle the camera by disconnecting and reconnecting power.
6.2 Poor Image Quality
- Clean the lens: Dust or smudges on the dome cover can degrade image quality.
- Adjust focus (if applicable): While the FD9187-H has a fixed lens, ensure no physical obstructions are affecting the view.
- Check lighting conditions: Ensure WDR Pro and Smart IR settings are optimized for the environment.
- Verify resolution and frame rate settings: Ensure they are set appropriately for your network bandwidth and storage capacity.
6.3 Motion Detection Issues
- Adjust sensitivity: Modify the sensitivity settings for PIR and Smart Motion Detection in the camera's web interface.
- Define detection zones: Ensure the areas you want to monitor are correctly configured as detection zones.
- Check for obstructions: Ensure nothing is blocking the PIR sensor's field of view.
