1. Safety Instructions
Always read and understand all safety instructions before operating the Texas CB8700 scythe mower. Failure to follow these instructions can result in serious injury or death.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear appropriate PPE, including safety glasses, hearing protection, sturdy footwear, and long pants.
- Fuel Handling: Handle gasoline with extreme care. Store fuel in approved containers in a well-ventilated area away from ignition sources. Refuel outdoors with the engine off and cool.
- Work Area: Clear the work area of debris, rocks, and other objects that could be thrown by the mower. Keep bystanders, especially children and pets, at a safe distance (at least 15 meters).
- Operation on Slopes: Exercise extreme caution when operating on slopes. Mow across the face of slopes, never up and down. Avoid excessively steep slopes.
- Maintenance: Disconnect the spark plug wire before performing any maintenance or adjustments. Ensure all guards and safety devices are in place and functioning correctly.

3. Setup
3.1 Unpacking and Assembly
- Carefully remove the mower and all components from the packaging.
- Inspect for any shipping damage. Report any damage to your dealer immediately.
- Attach the handle assembly to the main unit using the provided hardware. Ensure all bolts are securely tightened.
- Verify that the cutter bar is securely attached and moves freely.
3.2 Adding Fuel and Oil
The engine is shipped without oil or fuel. It is crucial to add both before first use.
- Engine Oil: Fill the engine with SAE 30 engine oil. The oil tank volume is 0.6 liters. Use the dipstick to ensure the oil level is between the 'min' and 'max' marks. Do not overfill.
- Fuel: Fill the fuel tank with fresh, unleaded gasoline. Do not use E85 or other ethanol blends not approved for small engines. Do not overfill the tank; leave space for fuel expansion.
WARNING: Never refuel while the engine is running or hot. Avoid spilling fuel. If fuel is spilled, wipe it up immediately and wait for fumes to dissipate before starting the engine.
4. Operating
4.1 Pre-Operation Check
- Check engine oil level.
- Check fuel level.
- Inspect the cutter bar for damage or wear.
- Ensure all nuts, bolts, and fasteners are tight.
4.2 Starting the Engine
- Ensure the fuel valve is open (if applicable).
- Set the choke lever to the 'CHOKE' position for a cold engine. For a warm engine, set to 'RUN' or 'HALF CHOKE'.
- Move the throttle lever to the 'FAST' position.
- Grasp the recoil starter handle firmly and pull slowly until resistance is felt, then pull quickly and smoothly to start the engine. Repeat if necessary.
- Once the engine starts, gradually move the choke lever to the 'RUN' position as the engine warms up.
4.3 Mowing Operation
- Engage the cutter bar clutch (if equipped) and the wheel drive lever.
- Walk at a steady pace, allowing the mower to cut efficiently. Do not force the mower through dense vegetation.
- Adjust the cutting height as needed (maximum adjustable cutting height: 80 cm).
- When turning, disengage the cutter bar and wheel drive, maneuver the mower, then re-engage.
4.4 Stopping the Engine
- Disengage the cutter bar and wheel drive.
- Move the throttle lever to the 'SLOW' or 'IDLE' position and allow the engine to cool for a few minutes.
- Turn the engine switch to the 'OFF' position.
- Close the fuel valve (if applicable) for storage.
5. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your Texas CB8700 scythe mower. Always disconnect the spark plug wire before performing any maintenance.
5.1 Engine Oil
- Check oil level before each use.
- Change engine oil after the first 5 hours of operation, then every 25 hours or annually, whichever comes first.
5.2 Air Filter
- Inspect the paper and foam air filter elements every 10 hours or more frequently in dusty conditions.
- Clean the foam element with warm, soapy water, rinse, and allow to dry completely. Lightly oil the foam element before reinstallation.
- Replace the paper element if it is excessively dirty or damaged.
5.3 Cutter Bar
- Clean the cutter bar after each use to remove grass and debris.
- Inspect the blades for sharpness and damage. Sharpen or replace blades as needed.
- Lubricate moving parts of the cutter bar according to the lubrication schedule in the full manual.
5.4 Storage
- For long-term storage, drain the fuel tank or add a fuel stabilizer. Run the engine until it stops to consume all fuel in the carburetor.
- Clean the entire machine thoroughly.
- Store in a clean, dry area, protected from extreme temperatures.
6. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Engine won't start | No fuel; old fuel; spark plug fouled; choke incorrect; fuel valve closed | Add fresh fuel; clean/replace spark plug; adjust choke; open fuel valve |
| Engine runs poorly | Dirty air filter; old fuel; incorrect oil level | Clean/replace air filter; drain and refill with fresh fuel; adjust oil level |
| Poor cutting performance | Dull blades; grass too high/wet; cutter bar clogged | Sharpen/replace blades; mow in smaller passes; clean cutter bar |
| Excessive vibration | Loose components; damaged blade; bent shaft | Check all fasteners; inspect/replace blade; contact service if shaft is bent |
