1. Introduction

This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your ecobee4 Smart Thermostat. The ecobee4 is designed to help you save energy and live more comfortably by intelligently managing your home's heating and cooling. It features built-in Amazon Alexa Voice Service and comes with a Room Sensor to help manage hot and cold spots in your home.

2. Setup and Installation

2.1 What's Included

• ecobee4 Smart Thermostat
• Room Sensor with detachable stand
• Installation Guide
• Backplate
• Trim Plate (optional, for covering marks from old thermostat)
• Power Extender Kit (PEK) (for homes without a C-wire)
• Mounting hardware (screws and drywall anchors)

2.2 Pre-Installation Checklist

1. Compatibility: Ensure your HVAC system is compatible. The ecobee4 works with most 24 VAC heating and cooling systems.
2. Power: Turn off power to your HVAC system at the breaker box before beginning installation.
3. Tools: Gather necessary tools: Phillips screwdriver, wire strippers (if needed), drill (if needed for anchors).

2.3 Wiring and Mounting

Follow the detailed instructions in the included Installation Guide for wiring. The ecobee4 requires a C-wire for continuous power. If your system does not have a C-wire, use the provided Power Extender Kit (PEK).

• Remove Old Thermostat: Carefully remove your old thermostat from the wall. Take a picture of the wiring for reference.
• Label Wires: Use the provided labels to mark each wire as you disconnect it.
• Install Backplate: Mount the ecobee backplate to the wall using the provided screws and anchors. Ensure it is level.
• Connect Wires: Connect the labeled wires to the corresponding terminals on the ecobee backplate. Refer to the wiring diagram in the Installation Guide.
• Attach Thermostat: Snap the ecobee4 thermostat onto the backplate.

2.4 Initial Setup and App Pairing

Once the thermostat is mounted and power is restored, the ecobee4 will guide you through the initial setup on its touchscreen. This includes connecting to your Wi-Fi network and configuring basic settings.

• Wi-Fi Connection: Select your home Wi-Fi network and enter the password.
• HVAC System Configuration: The thermostat will detect your system type. Confirm the settings.
• Register Your Thermostat: Follow the on-screen prompts to register your ecobee4. This is essential for app control and remote access.
• Pair Room Sensor: The included Room Sensor will automatically pair with your ecobee4 during initial setup or can be paired later through the thermostat's menu. Place the sensor in a room where you want to balance temperature.
• Download ecobee App: Download the ecobee app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android) to control your thermostat remotely and access advanced features.

3. Operating Your ecobee4

3.1 Touchscreen Interface

The ecobee4 features a responsive touchscreen display for direct control. The main screen shows the current temperature, set temperature, and system mode. Swipe left or right to access menus for scheduling, settings, and more.

• Temperature Adjustment: Tap the temperature display and use the up/down arrows to change the set point.
• System Mode: Tap the system mode icon (e.g., Heat, Cool, Auto, Off) to switch between modes.
• Quick Changes: Access quick settings like Fan, Hold, and Vacation mode from the main screen.

3.2 Alexa Voice Control

With built-in Alexa Voice Service, you can control your ecobee4 and other smart home devices using voice commands. Simply say "Alexa" followed by your command.

• Temperature: "Alexa, set the thermostat to 72 degrees."
• Mode: "Alexa, turn on the heat."
• Information: "Alexa, what's the temperature in here?"
• Other Alexa Functions: Use Alexa for music, news, timers, and more, just like an Echo device.

3.3 Room Sensor Functionality

The included Room Sensor helps the ecobee4 understand occupancy and temperature in different areas of your home, allowing for more balanced heating and cooling.

• Smart Home/Away: Sensors detect when you're home or away to automatically adjust temperature for energy savings.
• Follow Me: The thermostat uses the average temperature of occupied rooms to determine the set point, ensuring comfort where you are.
• Placement: Place sensors in frequently used rooms, away from direct sunlight, drafts, or heat sources.

3.4 Using the ecobee App

The ecobee app provides full control over your thermostat from anywhere. It allows for advanced scheduling, detailed energy reports, and management of multiple ecobee devices.

• Scheduling: Create custom schedules for different times of day and days of the week.
• Energy Reports: View insights into your energy usage and savings.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Cleaning Your Thermostat

To maintain optimal performance and appearance, clean your ecobee4 periodically.

• Display: Use a soft, lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water or a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. Do not spray cleaner directly onto the screen.
• Body: Wipe the body of the thermostat with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals.

4.2 Room Sensor Battery Replacement

The Room Sensor uses a CR2032 coin cell battery. When the battery is low, you will receive a notification on the thermostat and in the ecobee app.

• Access Battery: Gently slide the back cover off the Room Sensor.
• Replace Battery: Remove the old CR2032 battery and insert a new one, ensuring correct polarity (+ side up).
• Reassemble: Slide the back cover back into place.

4.3 Software Updates

Your ecobee4 will automatically download and install software updates when connected to Wi-Fi. These updates provide new features, improvements, and bug fixes. Ensure your thermostat remains connected to the internet for these updates.
